Chapter Six
It was early in the afternoon and the three of us, Terrance, Damien, and myself, were still out working as instructed by the guards. Damien and me had started work out in the fields while Terrance worked inside a guards house finishing up. Damien turned to me.
You know, despite of all this bothersome stuff going on around the farm, it could be worse. He said to me. My ears perked up and I looked at him.
Worse? How could it be worse? Look at us. We been working on this bloody farm for nearly our entire lives. I asked. Damien shrugged off the comment.
That may be true, but think about this: What if we didnt have Brian over us? He asked me. I thought about this for a minute then smiled at him.
True. Very true, Damien. I said. I thought and decided to add to it. An wha if we ad less food to feed ourselves with? Damien laughed and we continued working.
So, we might be having an awful thing goin in our life at the time, but at least we know it could be worse. I smiled and nodded in agreement.
My ears perked up again to the sound of somebody running up towards us. I turned and saw Terrance running full speed towards us. He stopped in front of us, completely winded. What looked like blood was covering his hands and wrists and part of his body.
Brianblood. house. runget you. I frowned. I couldnt make heads or tails of what he was saying.
Terrance, calm down an tell us whats the matter. I said to him. He took a few deep breaths and stood up strait.
I was working in one of the guards houses and I opened a closet and I found Brian in it. He said. Damien looked at him like he was insane.
Why would Brian be hidin in a closet? Damien asked. Terrance growled and grabbed his shirt and pulled him closer.
No, you buffoon! Brian was dead! There was blood all over him and he dropped out and on me! He yelled. Damien growled and pushed him off. Terrance was about to swing at him but I grabbed his arm and held it back.
Calm down you two! We need to try an figure out wha to do abou this! I said. Terrance backed off and Damien turned to face me.
Knowing these bastards they will probably try and pin the whole thing on one of us. He said. I shuddered inside at the thought of what would happen to whoever it was pinned on. He would be hauled into town and into the center and get beheaded in front of everyone. Before that he would most likely be tormented on his way into town then spat upon as they brought him in.
I shook the thoughts from my head and looked at Terrance.
Alright, first thing that needs to get done is you need to be gettin washed up. Youll be the first one theyll look at if youre covered in his blood. I told him. He nodded then took off towards a well to wash off. I looked at Damien.
Now, we saw nothing an heard nothing. Right? I asked. Damien nodded to me and we decided to get back to work as if nothing out of the ordinary had happened.
Four long hours later we were finally called to our barracks. I looked up at the sky and scratched my head.
Damien I said. He turned to look at me as we kept walking.
What is it, Renard? he asked. I pointed up at the sun.
Look. It is only about Fi o-clock. Why do you spose we would be goin in this early if there werent somethin up? I asked him. He looked up at the sun and noticed that it was still relatively early. He sighed and kept on walking. I guessed that he also knew what was up. Terrance walked up next to me. I could tell he had also noticed how early we had gone in, for he had a dreadful look on his face. I kept walking and we soon entered the barracks. I walked over to my bed where Jewell was sitting and sat down next to her. She looked at me and could see I was sore so she got up and went to somebody elses bed and sat down. I lay back on the bed and closed my eyes. I was exhausted from the long day and something inside of me knew it could only get worse.
