Chapter List

It didnt take long for my feelings to be proven true. Five minutes later six guards walked into the barracks and looked around the room at us. I sat up in my bed and looked over at them. One of them spoke up.
Something as appened today. Your master as been slain. Now, we know that it was one of you beasts. We also know which one. You can speak up now and avoid a harsher punishment or, you can stay silent and the guard that ad seen you will point you out and you will be sentenced to death. You ave one night to come forth and admit the deed. The guard announced. Everybody looked at each other but nobody spoke up. The guards then turned and walked out. As soon as the sound of the door being locked was heard almost everybody moved and began talking about what had been said.
Master Brian? Killed?
I wonder who would do that?
I bet it was that wolf, Terrance. That bloke as killed before an now hes killed again!
He never killed nobody you buffoon! That was a lie! I doubt it was he. I think it was Richard!
Suspecting me, you chicken brained weasel!?! The chattering and accusing went on and on and a couple fights broke out.
Meanwhile, Terrance had come over and sat on Damiens bed and Jewell had come over to mine and sat down next to me in the confusion of events.
Whats going on? she asked.
Brian, the farm owner, has been killed. Damien said to her. She looked at him then at Terrance then me.
Is that a good thing? Does that mean we can all be on our way? she asked hopefully. Terrance scoffed.
If only that were so. No, thats a bad thing. Most likely one of those cruel guards will take over. I tell you now though, it was no animal that had killed him. He said. Jewell looked at him.
How are you sure? she asked him.
Terrance ad found the body earlier today. Ad it been an animal that did him in then surely enough they would ave said somethin about it by now. I said to her. She nodded slowly then got up and walked off. I looked down and sighed.
It might be worse then it seems. Damien said. I looked up at him and Terrence turned to face him better.
How so? Terrance asked.
Think about it. Who has pissed off the guards most recently? Damien asked. My ears went back and I looked at Terrance. I could tell by the look in his eyes that he too had come to the same conclusion: it will most likely be one of us that are pulled away. I lay down and closed my eyes. I didnt want to think about it at all. Terrance got up and went off to his bed and also lay down and closed his eyes. When I looked over at him I had seen something in his expression I had not seen in all the three years I had known him. There was fear now. I could tell that he was afraid. I didnt blame him, I was afraid to and I knew Damien was also. I closed my eyes again and tried to sleep. It was difficult when I knew that the morning would only bring trouble for one of the three of us.
