Chapter List
Chapter Five
A few hours later we had finished all of our chores that were on the list. We were relieved to find we still had some time left before we would be called back to the barracks. We headed out the back to the well to wash up. I got water into the bucket from earlier and hauled it up with the rope. I poured the water into a small bin by the well and got down on my knees by it. I cupped my hands and dipped them into the water. I pulled my hands back out and splashed the water in them against my face. The water was cool and was a good relief from the hot sun. I smiled to myself as the water ran down the fur on my face and got some more water in my hands, doing the same and splashing more onto my face. I looked up at her and saw her just standing watching. I tilted my head a little.
Something wrong? I asked. She shook her head.
No, I just wanted to wait until you were done. She told me. I smiled and scooted back a little.
No need to wait, just help yourself. Theres plenty of water. She nodded and got down on her knees and scooped up some water and splashed it to her face.
Thats better. I dont think Ill ever get used to this place. I dont like it here at all. She sat back against the well and pulled her knees up against her chest and looked down at the ground.
I miss my parents. I miss talking to them. I miss being able to run around and play as much as I wanted. I remember when my father would sometimes come out and join me and run around with me. I sat down and leaned back, resting with my elbows propped up against the ground.
What are parents like? I asked her. She looked at me like I asked her in another language, like she didnt understand me.
What do you mean? Why werent you with your parents? She asked me. I looked down slightly and my ears went back.
My parents died when I was little. I told her.
Oh, Im sorry. So, where did you live before you came here? I sighed.
Im not sure. I was brought here after they died. I dont know what freedom is like. She nodded.
I see. well parents are nice to have. They take care of you when youre sick and comfort you when youre sad. They care about you and love you with all their hearts. I looked at her and smiled.
That sounds great. I told her. She nodded again in agreement and kneeled forward by the water bin and continued to wash off.

Terrance watched the two foxes from the window of another house.
Hey Damien, get over her. He called out to Damien who was cleaning off shelves in another room. Damien peeked out around the corner and looked at Terrance.
What is it? Damien asked. Terrance glanced back at him.
Just come here. Damien sighed and dropped his washcloth he was using and walked over to the window next to Terrance.
What? He asked him. Terrance pointed over at Renard and Jewell.
Look at that. I think theyre getting a little closer to each other all ready. Damien rolled his eyes.
I seriously doubt that suspicion.
Whys that? Terrance asked.
Well, I dont think Renard would even know what to do if he fancied her. I mean, the poor fox has lived here most of his life so this has been the first time since he was with his parents that hes met another fox. Damien pointed out. Terrance shook his head.
I suppose so. How can you be such good friends with somebody whos like that? He asked Damien.
