CULTURE
The word culture means the ideas, skills, tools, arts and the way of life of a certain people at a certain time. While studying Indian cultures in the United States scientist found six great culture areas.

The Indians of each area or region of the United States shared similar natural surroundings and had much the same kind of culture. The pictures throughout this site and on the site links show the way people lived in a certain area of the United States. They show that in each area the Indians had special ways of getting the things they needed to live.

The United States has many different kinds of land and climate. In each of these six areas there are special landforms, plants, animals, and raw materials. The Native Americans who lived in each area had to find a way to stay alive where they lived. If a group could not find what they needed in one area they moved to another.

When a family of Indians found a place with good hunting and plenty of seeds and berries, they settled down. They then learned to find ways to use the trees and plants, its animals, and its stones and earth.

Because each area had different plants, animals, and raw materials each group developed their own clothing, food, houses, and utensils. Thus the Indians lived in different ways in different parts of the country. They were not all the same.

One of the ways that Native Americans keep their traditions alive is by telling stories. Read one of these original stories.
