Venue and DJ review for Spundae.

Spundae @ Circus
6655 Santa Monica Blvd
Hollywood, CA
Feat. The Crystal Method (live), Barry Ashworth, Cass
Sat. 7.27.02
By Derek Kwan

Spundae, the weekly epitome of excellence in the club scene, really dropped a bomb on Hollywood tonight. At 11PM, Barry Ashworth of the Dub Pistols has the crowd pumped with his funky, bass-driven Dub tracks. His energetic set is accentuated by his fist-pumping and wild dancing behind the tables. Ashworth is so excited to be here that it seems his head might explode at any second. Over in the back room, Brandon Meyers is spinning some groovy and deep Down-Tempo, warming up the fans for Super-Spundae resident Cass and his CD release party. Meyers' smooth style is perfect for those seeking a little refuge from the mania of the rather hot and crowded main room.

By midnight, Spundae is thoroughly packed, and there is barely room to breathe on the main floor. The enormous hodge-podge of people tonight seems to contain everyone from ravers to beach folk to LA glam and hippies. Cass has taken over the back room, starting with a few bass-driven Down-Tempo tracks before dropping into a hot House set. Cass is simply fantastic, and has a decent amount of people dancing away before him. But unfortunately, the majority of the crowd is in the main room, as Scott Kirkland and Ken Jordan of The Crystal Method have crept up behind the turntables, playing a little warm-up House set before their live performance. Their mixing skills are immediately apparent, and there energetic antics show their unbridled enthusiasm in playing to this excited LA crowd tonight.

Shortly after, a sit-in DJ keeps the tunes going as our headliners rush onto the special stage erected in their honor. As The Crystal Method is announced, an amazing light show blazes through the air, and the gigantic crowd roars with excitement. Armed with a synthesizer, keyboard and drum machine, Kirkland and Jordan put on one of the most spectacular live performances EVER. Old-school Method fans would immediately recognize the familiar Acid House sound of the first few tracks, but the rest of their versatile and eclectic set has some new and old stuff ranging from deep House to some dope Big Beat. Where they find the energy to dance and jump about the stage and play such an adrenalized live set after their DJ set is anybody's guess, but the results are absolutely breathtaking.

Ashworth, with apparently plenty left in his tank, takes over at 1:30, now spinning a deep Progressive House set with sexy vocals and jazzy sax samples. Still jumping and yelling, Barry even pauses to high-five the partygoers closest to the stage. As your now spent and overwhelmed writer stumbles into the back room to see a little more of Cass, The Crystal Method has actually gotten back on the tables in the main room AGAIN to finish the evening. This time, they pull out some Method trademark House and Breaks anthems that the partygoers go ecstatic for. At 3:45, AC/DC's 'For Those About to Rock…', with no remixing whatsoever, strangely blares for about a minute or two, leaving many disgruntled clubbers scratching their heads and looking around confusedly. Joke over, The Crystal Method closes the evening with an AMAZING display of mixing on a few hyper-cool tracks until the lights come on, the speakers go silent, and the remaining crowd collectively collapses on the floor in a group puddle of exhaustion. If for whatever reason you weren't a Crystal Method fan before attending this event, there can be no doubt you're out buying their CD's, or at least stealing their MP3's online today.
