About Cancun

Little more than two decades ago, Cancun was just a deserted, sun-drenched island off the northeast tip of the Yucatan peninsula. But in the early 1970's, Cancun opened a few hotels, and took its first steps towards becoming one of the most popular international resorts in the world. Over the next few years, Cancun grew by leaps and bounds into a mega-resort, and now boasts some of the most beautiful luxury hotels in existence.

Cancun's modern civilization still holds a touch of legendary Mayan magic. Luxurious beachfront hotels still collide with exotic jungles, and the beautiful, turquoise Caribbean waters kiss the white sandy beaches as if in some tropical dream. Past student visitors from all over the states can tell you that the weather is absolutely perfect, the ocean waves are comfortably warm, there is a host of recreational activities, and the nightlife is unparalleled. Whether you are exploring Cancun during the day and enjoying its spectacular sun and surf and rich culture, or partying all night in its fabulous bars and clubs, the opportunities for fun in Cancun are endless.

The tropical paradise that is Cancun attracts over 200,000 college students each year for Spring Break, making it the largest international destination for college students from the United States. The 14-mile long island is located off the northeast tip of the Yucatan Peninsula in the Mexican Caribbean. The powder white beaches, turquoise blue waters, and endless attractions and activities attract millions of tourists every year, as well as host numerous celebrity events, including the infamous MTV's Spring Break.

Daytime Activities
Cancun plays host to the famous beach bashes at Fat Tuesdays and the Oasis Hotel, with wild contests and giveaways, as well as volleyball tournaments. Visitors can relax at the beach and catch a tan, or lounge by one of the pool bars. Cancun is home to the second largest coral reef in the world, casting an impressive setting for some of the most incredible snorkeling and scuba diving found anywhere. Many other local activities include sailing, skydiving, cliff diving, deep sea and flats fishing, as well as a chance to swim with dolphins! There are excursions to the ancient Mayan pyramids, as well as the ruins at Talum or the Temple of Kulucan a Chichen Itza, and guided and private jungle tours deep into the Sian Ka'an biosphere.

Dining and Drinking
Restaurants in Cancun are everywhere, in downtown, on the boulevard, and in the hotels and shopping malls, with a variety of cuisine to satisfy every taste and appetite. One can find authentic Mexican cuisine, delicious seafood and steak restaurants, as well as pizza and hamburger joints. Live Mariachi bands play at many locales every night. The legal drinking age in Mexico is 18 years.

The NightLife
Cancun really shines when the sun goes down, with jazz clubs, salsa bars, reggae and rock lounges, and world famous clubs like La boom, Dady'O, Coco Bongo, The Myth, and Senior Frogs, flashing fantastic light shows, theme parties, and music until sunrise. Tropical rhythms abound with live bands from Puerto Rico and Cuba. Most discos open at ten and present different promotions every night. Also available is a Spring Breaker favorite, the exotic Booze Cruise over to Isla Mujers.

The Weather
Daily temperatures are in the mid 80's and nightly low's are in the 60's during the month of March, making Cancun's weather perfect for Spring Break. This temperate climate is mainly due to the gentle trade winds blowing across the Caribbean.

Transportation
Taxis are government regulated and readily available in Cancun. It is always a good idea to establish a set fare before you depart. You may ask at your hotel what a specific trip should cost. Tipping the driver is not expected. Public bus service is also available at an affordable rate, about $.50 per ride.

Changing Money
The unit of currency is the Peso, which is currently 9.5 to 1 US dollar. You can usually change money at your hotel, although the rates may not be the best. Currency exchange houses have longer hours than the banks and both have good rates. Another option is to use your credit card since they usually get the best bank rates. Click here to check the current exchange rate.

Medical Information
Paradise Parties provides a medical staff for our students. If for any reason you should become ill, our staff can refer you to one of our trusted MDs.

About the Water
The water in Cancun hotels and food establishments is generally safe and purified, but care must still be taken to avoid Turista, which causes symptoms such as stomach discomfort. We suggest drinking bottled water to avoid any risk.

Entry Requirements
Citizens of the United States and Canada are required to present a valid passport or an official, state-issued birth certificate AND photographic identification, such as a driver's license. A tourist card (provided at the airport) must also be completed, presented upon entering Mexico, retained during one's stay, and surrendered upon leaving the country. The tourist card is available at Mexican Consulates, travel agencies, or airline check-in counters.

Language
Many people in Cancun have an understanding of the English language. Most service employees speak both English and Spanish.

Electricity
The same as in the U.S.A. and Canada: 110 Volts, 60 cycles, A.C.

Tipping
The general custom is to tip 15% on restaurants and bar bills, $2 (U.S.) per person for bellboys, and $2 (U.S.) per room/per night for maids.
