Arman gives us a glimpse into the mind of a Brainchild…
How would you describe your style of music to newcomers?
I think my style is very unique. They're all my own remixes. My music is very Tribey and Trancey, and deep driven. I like to use edgy vocals and sexy sounds. It's hard to put into words. You just have to hear it.
As a young Brainchild growing up, what positive or negative musical influences did you have?
Growing up in New York, it was mostly Hip-Hop and Reggae. I didn't get into Electronica until the late 80's. Music classes didn't really promote Electronica music very much, so school wasn't that big an influence.
Which musicians and/or DJ's would you consider to be your main influences, past and present?
I love Opera music, like Andrea Bocelli. For DJ's, I dig Pete Tong. He's got a great style. Old school producers were great, and sounded very unique. Really, the people's reaction to trance around 7 or 8 years ago, they really dug it. I played a Trance song, and people would react to it. My brother said this was your thing, your style.
So it was more the scene and your family that influenced you towards Electronica and Trance, rather than any specific DJ?
Yeah, it was definitely the scene up in San Fran. And the people's reaction to the music, I felt it in my head and body, and that's what I love.
Which big name DJ's have you spun with, and would like to spin with?
Sasha and Digweed and Chemical Brothers recently, all in one room! I've played with Carl Cox, toured with Darude. There are so many. I would like to spin with Pete Tong; he really works the mixer well. Each DJ is incredible for their style, incredible in what they do, and have it in their own mind what they want to accomplish.
If you were stranded on a remote island, which three CD's would you want, assuming you have a radio and electricity?
One Essential CD (whoever), a Clubbers Guide CD, and a Best of Trance CD. No specific DJ's, I just love the music.
Which musician, alive or dead, would you like to be locked in a room with, for discussion purposes only?
Mozart. I want to pick his brain. The sheet notes he had were just amazing and very intelligent.
What are some career goals you have for yourself as a DJ?
As a DJ, I want to try and make it, build a great following, play everywhere. Everything is time. Time plays its toll, pulls you along. I want people recognizing what I produce; recognizing us for our style.
Talk about a few of your upcoming events. What can we expect from your sets?
I'm playing at Red this Friday (May 3rd in LA). Wonderworld (May 31st in Northern Cali), Orgy (April 27th in Barneveld), and Porno Star (debuting May 17th in Santa Clara). Our 'World Domination Tour 2002' will be over the summer. From my sets, expect a lot of emotion, driven beats and character.
How has Electronica music evolved since you got into the scene?
I think its evolved great, and we have to owe the credit to the big hitters. Everyone knows who they are. It's their money and press that has made Electronica huge. Also, people understanding the music, giving it a shot, and liking it. People love the vibe and energy rather than the big names. Now, people attend events for the music instead of 'so and so' is playing there.
In which direction do you see Electronica going in the near future and the rave culture in general?
I think that rave culture is growing. I'm getting older and going to clubs, my younger brother and sister are getting into it now too. The rave scene isn't as hardcore as before, because money gets involved, and things get too big. But the Electronica scene is growing, getting bigger. You hear it in movies and commercials. I think it will become more mainstream, like it is in Europe.
What quote would you have inscribed on your tombstone, as a message to everyone for all eternity?
Peace, love and unity through music.
