Venue and DJ review for Club 705.

Club 705
705 Pier Ave
Hermosa Beach, CA
Feat. DJ Irene and Rebecca Sin
By Derek Kwan

Hermosa Beach is not the first place that comes to mind when seeking a hot night of Electronica. However, TWP (TheWorldParty.net) is seeking to quiet those doubts with their weekly events in the South Bay, tonight presenting 'The Girly Show' with Rebecca Sin and the legendary DJ Irene at Club 705. The casually dressed beach city crowd is a balanced mix of late-20's and mid-30's partygoers. Rebecca Sin is spinning deep Progressive House on turntables suspended from the ceiling, haphazardly draped in caution tape, giving the DJ stage a tough, industrial feel. Sin's tracks tiptoe from Trancey to Tribal with her deep and versatile basslines, and she bobs and nods along with her beats, occasionally singing along with the lyrics. A handful of people wander onto the dance floor, and a pair of go-go dancers adorned in white fuzzy outfits clamber onto their stages. Shortly after 11, the crowd begins to arrive and the dance floor begins to fill. Rebecca picks up the pace, and the room is hot in the blink of an eye. Sin shows her ability to play to the crowd, turning up her energy along with the vibe.

In the other room, Hip-Hop DJ's Snoop and Warrior are tag-teaming the turntables, spinning the latest tracks from the mainstream arena. As the people on the dance floor groove to the rhythms, others relaxing in the plush sofas or nibbling on their California Rolls at the late night sushi bar are head bobbing along with the beats. Snoop especially shows his scratching and mixing skills, flawlessly blending beats and smoothly flowing from one track to the next. One popular Hip-Hop song after another boom intensely from the speakers, but the closer each beat gets to the other room, the more it seems to fade harmlessly into the night, for DJ Irene has arrived.

To say Irene is energetic would be a severe understatement. Her appearance on the stage draws cheers from the crowd before she even approaches the turntables. She takes Sin's last track and throws a few clever beats and fades before stopping the music. Steve from TWP gets on the mic and gives some props to Rebecca Sin for her silky smooth set. He announces that today is his birthday to the rather patient crowd, and then introduces the headliner for this evening, 'the biggest selling female DJ of all time, DJ Irene'! The crowd erupts as Irene drops the needle on her first hyper-fast track. She is a blur of motion and skill on the tables, her adrenaline-driven House tracks bordering on Hardcore. Each buildup's drumbeat quickly goes from fast to hyperspace before dropping in, whipping the packed room into a rabid frenzy. Chants from the crowd of 'Irene, Irene' impressively keep rhythm with the beat, and the energy of the place is nothing short of explosive. Irene's set is as wild as her spiky hair, with clapping and fist pumping, and t-shirts flung into the crowd and sporadic yelling into the mic. At times, her pulse-pounding and breathless set allows the crowd a momentary breather with a few Trancey mixes, such as 'Castles in the Sky' and a short jazzy snippet of 'Careless Whisper'. Yes, THAT 'Careless Whisper'. But on the whole, Irene hardly lets her crowd up for air, challenging them to keep pace, and they absolutely love her for it. Strangely, Irene ends her set indiscreetly, and slinks off the stage with barely a word. She gives a wave before she yields the tables back to Rebecca Sin, and in an instant, Irene is gone. Sin takes the crowd until closing with a continued superb set; her smooth House a sharp contrast to Irene's pseudo-Hardcore.

TWP and Club 705's 'The Girly Show' definitely showed that the ladies can light up the turntables. The silky technician Rebecca Sin and the feisty DJ Irene played an amazing evening that gave a bit of validation to the South Bay Electronica scene. The spent and exhilarated crowd that filed out the doors should be thankful to have attended one surprisingly incredible event.
