Radio Kurtodrome 95
Thirty minutes of downloads and streams (all files are legal, the downloads are marked 'D'), that is Radio Kurtodrome. A short odyssey of nonsense and bands you may or may not know.
LAUREN HOFFMAN - Love Gone Wrong (D)
Lauren Hoffman has a new album out and it's called Choreography. The cover shows you Lauren next to a piano hanging over a chair, a fitting visualisation of her album. Beautiful and very human. 'Love gone wrong' peels aways the layers of a love gone wrong. Ready for emotion?
ARCTIC MONKEYS - Scummy (demo) (D)
One of the demo tracks by the Arctic Monkeys, that were put on the net and made the band famous before they'd even signed a record contract, may be called "Scummy", but we recognize the Monkeys' current single "When The Sun Goes Down" all too well.
MY MORNING JACKET - Off The Record (stream)
Years ago we were plugging My Morning Jacket so hard people started suspecting they were Belgian. They're not, we just liked them.
BLONDE REDHEAD - Slogan (D)
Melodie Citronique was an EP Blonde Redhead released on Touch & Go in 2000. It featured an incredibly beautiful French version of "In Particular" and this Serge Gainsbourg cover.
CALEXICO - Ballad of Cable Hogue (French version) (D)
Another older song. Calexico also recorded a French version of their song "The Ballad of Cable Hogue". You can obviously hear French is far from their mother tongue, but we appreciate their effort. And we just noticed we never played this before on Radio Kurtodrome. Et c'est mieux de jouer une chanson un peu plus tard que de l'oublier pour toujours, n'est-ce pas?
ANNA TERNHEIM - To Be Gone (D)
This MP3 was offered to us by inpromo, on the condition we'd provide a link and a copyright notice (© Universal Music). Anna Ternheim's cd is called Somebody Outside and it's the debut of this 25-year-old Swedish singer-songwriter.
MUGISON - What I Would Say In Your Funeral (D)
The first time we brought Mugison's quirky album Mugimama to your attention was in our Democratische 99 of 2005. We didn't select this song (because there are better tracks on the album), but it's the first time we got our hands on a full track (and we hope it may encourage you to look for more). The other voice you hear is Mugison's girlfriend (one of the many collaborators on this album). Negative remark: the title gives a good indication of Mugison's grasp of the English language. (Offered by Insound)
LOW - Nowhere Man (D)
This Bird Has Flown: A 40th Anniversary Tribute to the Beatles is the 40th anniversary tribute to The Beatles' Rubber Soul album featuring the record's songs performed by a host of indie favorites. You get wonderful interpretations by The Donnas, Sufjan Stevens, The Fiery Furnaces, Cowboy Junkies, and many others. Here's the song that Low covered. The MP3 you can hear has been offered by Insound. We're off on a trip to Nowhere Land to find more good music for our next edition. See you next time!
