Radio Kurtodrome 94
Thirty minutes of downloads and streams (all files are legal, the downloads are marked 'D'), that is Radio Kurtodrome. A short odyssey of nonsense and bands you may or may not know.
THE DEATH OF ANNA KARINA - Me and Wittgenstein Down The Street By The Schoolyard (D)
We'll kick off this first edition of 2006 with an urgent plea: will everybody please stop making referential music and go back to creating sounds? Thanks! This is Italian band The Death of Anna Karina and a track that is an obvious reference to a well-known cult hit. Their debut album New Liberalistic Pleasures will be out later this month and while we have some reserves as to including the track in RK94 it's a nice musical jump to our second track.
BELLE & SEBASTIAN - Another Sunny Day (D)
A few weeks ago my mother and I were in the car on the way to the station when a funny thing happened... the DJ played Yonderboi and cut the track off in the middle of the song, claiming there was sadly not enough time to play the track in full. Adding, "and here's a song from Belle & Sebastian". This song then was also taken off the air smack in the middle, when we were subjected to a stupid radio column which informed us that phone-in games on tv are stupid. Well, I never knew... thanks for breaking off two tracks to tell me this. Radio Kurtodrome will now take revenge by playing those two songs (be it in reverse order): first a FULL Belle & Sebastian track from their new album (released in February 2006). It'll be called The Life Pursuit. We can't say this track convinces us to rush out and buy the new album, so excuse us while we wait and go back into time (i.e. 2005) to plug one of the most underrated albums.
YONDERBOI - All We Go To Hell (stream)
Splendid Isolation is the second cd from the Hungarian Yonderboi. His debut was released in 2000 and we finally heard about it in 2003 (see the RK archives for further details). "All We Go To Hell" is the opening track of the new album and is the best track. Beautiful and scary at the same time. I had this on my discman the other day when I was walking through a rainstorm... well worth getting sick for. (Stream provided by VPRO)
JUDITH JUILLERAT - Slacktime (D)
French Judith Juillerat has always had a passion for Krautrock like Einsturzende Neubauten and Tarwater. This becomes obvious when you're listening to "Slacktime" from her album Soliloquy (out on T. Raumschmiere's label Shitkatapult). Does the light bother you? Does the light bother you?
COCOROSIE - Beautiful Boyz (stream)
CocoRosie collaborated with Antony (of the Johnsons) on "Beautiful Boyz", but there is an alternative version without Antony. As much as we like Antony the other version pleases us much more. The alternative version was released as an EP back in 2004. This stream is provided by the VPRO.
BROKEN SPINDLES - This is an introduction (D)
We'd like to describe this as the bastard child of The Postal Service and Bright Eyes. Similar in style to Postal Service but released on Saddle Creek Records. That this track from Inside/absent also reminded us of The Faint is no coincidence: Broken Spindles is also part of The Faint.
BRIGHT EYES - Gold Mine Gutted (D)
I must confess that there's been a period I'd heard more than enough from Conor Oberst. While looking for the best tracks of 2005 I noticed there were a few tracks we never should've left unplugged, so with a small delay we're picking up on them. One track already made it into our Democratische 99 and here's another one. You can find this song on Digital Ash in a Digital Urn, just one of the album Bright Eyes released in 2005.
LAVENDER DIAMOND - Rise in the Springtime (D)
Lavender Diamond have been compared to the music of Devendra Banhart (we're not completely sure why) and funnily enough Lavender Diamond have now released a split 7" with Queens of Sheeba (which includes Devendra). The split is out on Cold Sweat and that labels likens Lavender Diamond to Fairport Convention and Velvet Underground (we can definitely agree with the first comparison). This track can be found on the EP The Cavalry of Light.
MI AND L'AU - Older (D)
Mi and L'au met in Paris a few years back. Mi is Finnish and was working as a model to make ends meet and L'au (who's French) was working in the music industry (soundtracks, I think). They fell deeply and immediately in love, and after a short period of moving from apartment to apartment in Paris, they gave everything up and decided to move to the woods in Finland, so they could be alone together in peace and to spend their time discovering each other and their music. The result is a self-titled album that's out on Young God Records. Radio Kurtodrome will return in just over 10 days. A la prochaine!
