Radio Kurtodrome 83
Never give up on us, we'll tell you when we pull the plug. The only thing we're pulling is the switch: switch yourself on for another 30 minutes of (D)s (downloads) and streams. Though we had plans of a soft edition, once again fate led us to other destinations: it's fuzzy, funky, electronic, rocky and obstinate. It's Radio Kurtodrome edition 83... enjoy the ride.
LALI PUNA - Past Machine
Valerie Trebeljahr and Markus Acher have recently recorded two coverversions under the name John Yoko, but that doesn't mean Lali Puna isn't around anymore. The band has toured Japan and took the time to make a video diary on their label's site (Japan 2005). To kick off this edition of Radio Kurtodrome, the VPRO was kind enough to put a streamed song online.
BARBARA MORGENSTERN & ROBERT LIPPOK - Wake me up before meals (D)
Let's stay in Germany: out on Gudrun Gut's Monika label is a collaboration between Robert Lippok and Barbara Morgenstern. You should've heard of her by now. The tracks on Tesri have been recorded in a timespan of more than two years and while that's impressive we still find it lacking something. But that doesn't mean it isn't good enough to mention it here.
THE HERBALISER - Gadget Funk (D)
The Herbaliser are back and will probably come to a festival near you this summer. Take London is the name of their latest album and "Gadget Funk" already give you a fuzzy funky feeling.
DAS ALDI COMBO - Human Fly (D)
Das ALDI Combo are from Holland (Groningen) and thought it was a good thing to cover The Cramps in a souljazz version. Which, I'm sure, at least sounds intriguing to you, no?
AND THE LEFTHANDED - Mr Unpronouncable (D)
And that Dutch song made us think of the Finnish band Larry and the Lefthanded. If you used to watch Alternative Nation (in the 90s, when it was still good), you might have seen them on the show (with songs like "Dance Me Me"). They even survived the millennium, it turns out though one person left the band and they're now called And The Lefthanded. In 2002 they released a self-titled EP on Éllet records and this was the first track on that release.
FLEXA LYNDO - If you scream it right now (D)
Next stop: Belgium, that darn country with Flemings and Wallonians. If you live in Flanders (like I do), chances are you'll only hear of Wallonian bands from sites in other countries. It were the Dutch who informed me Flexa Lyndo have a new album out. It's called Slow Club. We haven't found a sample yet, but we did track down this unreleased song, so let's listen to that instead!
MILLIONAIRE - For A Maid
aND WE4LL... sorry... And we'll stay in Belgium, this time in Flanders, though Millionaire have definitely gone global with their first album. And now it's time for the second one. Let's play "For A Maid" (offered as a stream by the VPRO) as an appetizer!
AMY RAY - Driver Education (D)
Amy Ray's second solo album, Prom, explores the dance between gender and sexuality, man and woman, youth and adulthood, authority and rebellion. The setting is the South, both suburban and rural, where an undercurrent of whitewashed innocence and destructive value systems often hold the hierarchy together. Ray, one half of the Indigo Girls (remember?), released this album, like her last, on her independent label, Daemon Records. We will release our next edition in approximately 10 days. Salut!
