Radio Kurtodrome 81 (LIVE)

Disappointed we are. We'd wanted to do a Radio Kurtodrome special with all the artists we'd seen at the Domino festival (Patrick Wolf, Monade, Timesbold, Efterklang and LCD Soundsystem) and the results were rather disappointing. Only one artist (Patrick Wolf) combined with an older visit from the wonderful Timesbold... did we wait this long for almost nothing? But do not despair, (y)our patience is highly rewarded: on top of Patrick Wolf and Timesbold you'll get Nid + Sancy (the semi-Belgian couple who've now seen their album released in lots of countries, from France to Canada) and last week's concert by The Kills. So what do we get for waiting? 2 hours and 46 minutes of live music from soft to loud. All made available by the VPRO! So open your ears and enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

TIMESBOLD - Club 3VOOR12: 17/04/02 (29 min)
(Domino, AB, Brussels: 11/04/2005) Only yesterday someone in class mistook self-deprecating humour for a sign of arrogance, but that couldn't have happened with Timesbold at the Domino festival. The harp didn't work properly, prompting Timesbold to fill some time with comments and changing their tracklist. It didn't matter: if you were there, Timesbold won you over. It should be a lesson to Efterklang, the next band on stage, who are ten people and still feel the need to use video projections to capture your attention (and it's true, when I closed my eyes, I appreciated Efterklang less). Compare that to Timesbold: on stage you have five people who just firmly believed in music. Combine that with funny tales between the songs and candlelight on the instruments: as if it were a candlelight dinner with Timesbold as one part of the romantic couple and the audience as the other part. The result: musically they were able to bed us. (Songs played at Club 3VOOR12: I Hear You Hear / Word / Knife Attack Fine Time / Water Bearer / House Demands / Gin I Win)

PATRICK WOLF - Motel Mozaique 15/04/2005 (59 min)
Patrick's manager (if you're reading this: hello Jill and sorry to have taken up so much of your time) informed us that Patrick's voice wasn't in the bestest of shapes. And it's true: those of us who'd seen Patrick before knew he only went for 9/10 instead of the regular 10/10. Not that it mattered much: a Patrick Wolf with a bit of voice problems is still at least as impressive than the rest of any line-up. And it didn't hinder Patrick to sing a cappella from time to time. Compared to last year's album and concert, Patrick has grown. Gone is the boy with the laptop, here's a young man by the piano (or ukelele or...), assisted by a drummer. After the concert a few albums were sold at the merchandise stand, which is good news... more minions for Patrick! (Motel Mozaique is the Dutch equivalent of Domino: most artists also performed here and we were hoping to find audio material here for our reviews. Sadly this only worked for Patrick Wolf. Still, 59 minutes of the Wolf, eh!)

THE KILLS - Live at De Melkweg 26/04/2005 (58 min)
So while we were lamenting that we couldn't complete our original idea for a live special, suddenly it was the end of April and The Kills had visited the Lowlands. I couldn't make it to their Brussels concert, but their Dutch concert at De Melkweg was recorded by the VPRO. Kudos to the VPRO for the quick post and just the existence. 58 minutes of The Kills!

NID + SANCY - Club 3VOOR12: 23/03/05 (20 min)
Even since they did stints for theater companies, Bart Demey and Tania Gallagher wanted to have another name besides Galacticamendum, for the gigs when they just wanted to play and have fun. And that's how Nid + Sancy originated, which prompted a first release Never Mind The Bootlegs. (No points for guessing what the cover looked like.) These days the couple only works as Nid + Sancy and they have a new release out. Their promo tour took them to the VPRO studios for a session in Club 3VOOR12.
