Radio Kurtodrome 76
Some editions are better than others: this one was magic. I love listening to all the songs, the compilation was easily made, it contains new tracks by Low, L'Altra and LCD Soundsystem (and it's not easy to find tracks from those artists - just like Saint Etienne, who are also finally debuting in this edition) and a brand new Patrick Wolf song. And the other artists are wonderful too. This edition really is a charmer, I hope you'll enjoy it as much as I do.
LOW - Monkey (D)
Low have been around for quite a few years and have always been a band I wanted to buy an album from, but somehow that plan never managed to get materialized. And then came The Great Destroyer. Listened to half of the album online (at the Listening Booth on the VPRO site) and then went straight to the shop. Low are back (on the perennially great Subpop label), fiercer than before, and just listen to this, the opening track.
SAINT ETIENNE - Lose That Girl (D)
And speaking of Subpop, that label also released the new Saint Etienne, Travel Edition 1990-2005. Which may seem odd, as Subpop is no longer Saint Etienne's label: "In the late '90s and into 2000, we at Sub Pop Records conducted a brief, torrid affair with Saint Etienne. We parted amicably, each going our separate ways, never really able to forget (nor wanting to) the time we spent together, the memories we shared, the records we released. With this 18-song compilation, we're able, albeit briefly, to once again bask in the glow of our cosmopolitan friends in Saint Etienne." The compulation includes two previously unreleased tracks (of which one brand new). Subpop further informs us that "there have been hints at a new album in 2005". So more good news, then.
L'ALTRA - Mail Bomb (D)
And so begins their label bio: "By its very definition, L'altra could not possibly be run-of-the-mill. Any band whose name translates to "the feminine other" in a number of Romance languages surely has something dark and mysterious up its sleeve." L'Altra are back with a new album, Different Days, and finally we have an MP3 to show you how great they are. Listen carefully.
CAMERA OBSCURA - A red, red rose
We've mentioned before how the new Camera Obscura EP contained two melodic versions of Robert Burns poems. "I love my Jean" we played last time and here's the other poem. And a big thanks to Elefant, Camera Obscura's label, for giving us so much audio material: Radio Kurtodrome can only have regular editions thanks to labels (and bands) like you and we hope our plugging really helps you sell a few extra albums.
MILIE SIMON - Desert
And the same should be said of a site like the VPRO, not only for the amount of audio material, but also for the introduction to many unknown bands and artists. We mentioned milie Simon before and here she is with her first single, "Desert", two years old for any French listeners out there, brand new to to the rest of the world.
TIMESBOLD - Bone Song (D)
Glitterhouse are currently distributing the latest Timesbold album, Eye Eye. The band will be promoting that album all around Europe in April. To see when they're hitting Belgium, see the next artist...
PATRICK WOLF - Souvenirs (D)
The Belgian concert hall AB called Patrick Wolf "last year's Domino revelation" and decided to ask him for another concert. This time he'll play at 8pm, so this year I will NOT BLOODY WELL MISS MY LAST TRAIN TO ANTWERP! Still, well worth spending a night in the rainy cold. Patrick's new cd will be out in February and he'll be visiting Domino 2005 on April 11, together with Monade, Timesbold and Efterklang. So anyone who wants to call me to hear about my first day at my new job... sorry, I'll be in Brussels. "Souvenirs" is an MP3 treat from Patrick Wolf's site, which is only there for a limited time. So download now.
LCD SOUNDSYSTEM - Great Release
Also visiting Domino 2005: LCD Soundsystem (April 14). To end this edition of Radio Kurtodrome another track from what really is a great release, their eponymous debut album. This is far from the best song on the album, but it's a nice one to closa an edition with and it's brought to you via stream by the VPRO. I really enjoyed compiling this edition and I'll be seeing you in 10 days.
