Radio Kurtodrome 74
Aha! An interlude update from Radio Kurtodrome while we're compiling our favourite tracks from 2004. The list should go online by the end of this week, so the next Radio Kurtodrome will appear ten days after our Top 99 is online. For now, enjoy the early days of 2005 with a rocking edition.

GUIDED BY VOICES - Everybody Thinks I'm A Raincloud (When I'm Not Looking) (D)
2004 was the year Guided By Voiced decided to call it a day... forever. In August their last album Half Smiles of the Decomposed was released on Matador Records. This song proves why they'll be missed, at least by us.

THE OBLIVIANS - Locomotion
Okay, I can see why the regular Joes and Janes don't know them, but I'm surprised that so few people knew The Oblivians. To make this somewhat right... when the band split, they released an album The Best of the Worst and this cover could be found on that album. After The Oblivians Greg Oblivian continued ruining your ears with his new band Reigning Sound whereas Jack Oblivian went solo with the album So Low. We thank the VPRO for the stream.

MARIANNE FAITHFULL - My Friends Have (D)
It wasn't just John Cale who went back to fresh-sounding rock'n'roll. Marianne Faithfull's new album, Before The Poison, was made with the help of people like Nick Cave, Thurston Moore and PJ Harvey. ANTI distributes the album and provided this download. No points for guessing who of the above provided the background vocals on this track.

NEKO CASE - If You Knew (D)
Honestly, we're usually bigger fans of Neko Case when she's with The New Pornographers, but we're more than willing to make an exception for this new track. Off her latest solo album The Tigers Have Spoken here is "If You Knew". Maybe because it's live?

KATE MOSH - Do You Like Me? (D)
We accidently discovered Kate Mosh, but we don't regret it. "Do You Like Me?" can be found on Life Is Funfair, the debut album of this indierock band from Berlin.

LE TIGRE VS. MISSY ELLIOT - Deceptacon / Get Ur Freak On Mash-up (D)
Found on Le Tigre's website, this mash-up of the overexposed Missy Elliot track "Get Ur Freak On" with Le Tigre's classic "Deceptacon".

LE TIGRE - New Kicks (D)
Okay, so you want the real deal? Here they are unmashed... Le Tigre have a new album out and this track, a former Video of the Week, seems to be politically motivated. Because 2004 was a very political year. In case you didn't notice.

GIRLS AGAINST BOYS - Basstation (D)
2004 was also the year we noticed that quite a lot of tracks weren't featured in the oldest editions of Radio Kurtodrome... because they were just that tad older. Latest example: one of our most beloved Girls Against Boys songs, the opening track of You can't fight what you can't see.

THESE ARMS ARE SNAKES - Big News (D)
Best new band name of 2004? I don't know when These Arms Are Snakes were formed, but we discovered them thi... last year. Mind you, their debut album title Oxeneers or The Lion Sleeps When Its Antelope Go Home deserves a mention too.

JON SPENCER BLUES EXPLOSION - New Year Destroyer
In 2004 the Blues Explosion dropped the name of their singer from the band's name. This track is much older than current album Damage and it's with this anti-festive track from the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion we bid you farewell for now. It seems rather inappropriate to wish you a happy new year now, so let's just say... see you in two weeks.
