Radio Kurtodrome 61
This is Radio Kurtodrome, edition 61. Half an hour of angelic music this time. One stream (but a remarkable one) and lots of excellent downloads (D). Occasionally we're very proud of an edition and this is one of those.

JEFFREY LEWIS - Don't Let The Record Label Take You Out To Lunch (D)
We found this gem while looking for The Fiery Furnaces (cfr. infra) and decided to throw it in this episode. Mr. Lewis has been at the Kurtodrome before with "The Chelsea Hotel Oral Sex Song" (watch the video in our Video Archive) and "Back When I Was Four" and now he brings you good advice: Don't Let The Record Label Take You Out To Lunch, a song that can be found on his Rough Trade album It's The Ones Who've Cracked That The Light Shines Through.

SONIC YOUTH - Superstar (D)
Here's Sonic Youth's contribution to a Carpenters tribute album. I'm glad they posted this on their website.

THE AMERICAN ANALOG SET - Mellow Fellow (D)
Fans of the American Analog Set should take notice that the band promises regular updates of otherwise unavailable tracks. They just uploaded "Mellow Fellow" and here's the story: "Recorded in July 1999 and December 1999. The second half of this song appeared on 1996's "The Fun Of Watching Fireworks" as an intro to the third song, "Gone To Earth." The first half of the (formerly) complete version was included on our first demo tape mailed out in the fall of 1995. We indended to include the entire song on our first record, but the master tape was damaged beyond repair (by me) in a freak splicing incident following being recorded over (by me) in a freak overdubbing incident the day before. The song would have to wait for the magic of ProTools to be stiched back together, brought to life, and allowed to terrorize a small village in a too small sport coat. Enjoy."

SMOOSH - Make It Through (live at KEXP)
Their debut album will be released in September and if you think Asya sounds young, it's because she is: sisters Asya (12) and Chloe (10) are a Seattle indie duo and here's how the story started... "Smoosh was born of natural curiosity. While the family stood in line at Seattles Trading Musician store to pay for what they had intended to purchasea violinAsya and Chloe wandered upstairs to the percussion room. There, they met Jason McGerr (Death Cab For Cutie), teacher at the renowned Seattle Drum School where Chloe now studies, and left with a $600 drum kit, Jasons card, and no violin." This was one of the tracks they performed live in the KEXP studio. Smoosh have opened for Death Cab For Cutie, Cat Power and Sleater-Kinney. Ace!

THE FIERY FURNACES - Crystal Clear (D)
More siblings now: Eleanor and Matthew are sister and brother and they are The Fiery Furnaces. They're distributed by Rough Trade and their album is called Gallowbird's Bark. In our series of 'interesting jobs held by musicians', here's a good entry: "Eleanor worked as a telemarketer for the Texas Republican Party."

CAMERA OBSCURA - Keep it clean (D)
Here's more from Camera Obscura. And this time it's a single.

JOHN GUILT - Inferno (D)
John Guilt were nice enough to put an unreleased track on their website. It's been a while since we had them on Radio Kurtodrome, so enjoy.

THE NEW YEAR - Disease (D)
The New Year is a band formed by Matt and Bubba Kadane, the founding members of Bedhead. Bedhead released 3 full-length records, 2 EPs, and 3 singles between 1992 and 1998. The New Year was formed in the summer of 1999 and have released two records so far. The new album titled The End is Near was released in May 2004.

THE PAPER CHASE - Said The Spider (D)
The new pAper chAse album isn't out yet: you'll have to wait till September, but here's a little taster if you find waiting another month unacceptable. Unacceptable or not, the next Radio Kurtodrome will only be available in ten days. Stay well!
