Radio Kurtodrome 50
Radio Kurtodrome celebrates its 50th edition with an extra-large edition. How large? Large enough to fill an entire cd with just this edition. 78 minutes of legal MP3s are coming your way right now.
EAGLES OF DEATH METAL - I Only Want You (D)
Hyped before anyone heard a second of their music, the Eagles of Death Metal are Jesse "the Devil" Hughes, Carlo Von Sexron, and Timmy "Tipover" VanHamel. Tim Vanhamel is the leadsinger of Millionaire and Carlo is also known as Queens of the Stone Age's Josh Homme. I guess that explains the hype, no? The album is called Peace, Love and Death Metal and it's out on RekordsRekords.
Q AND NOT U - So many animal calls (D)
It's been two years since the last Q And Not U album, but the band's site tells us not to fear: "The band will be doing sporadic dates in the spring of '04 as they prepare to re-enter the studio to record a third full-length album." In the meantime, here's a track off Different Damage.
THE LIARS - Broken Witch (D)
The Liars have a new album out and once again it bears a beautiful title: They Were Wrong So We Drowned. I can only advise you to surf to the band's website (www.liarsliarsliars.com) for more downloads, but while you're here at Radio Kurtodrome, let's listen to the opening track of that new album, "Broken Witch". And yes, the rest of the album is equally haunting.
ERASE ERRATA - Tongue Tied (D)
You know how we sometimes remark that some tunes just keep lying on the shelves because we just can't fit them into one of our editions? Well, this particular track has almost been lingering around for a year or so, but - better late than never - it's finally time for Erase Errata. Following the immense success of their debut Other Animals, San Francisco's Erase Errata has opened for the likes of The Fall, Le Tigre, Fugazi, The Ex and Sonic Youth. See, that's impressive, that!
PRETTY GIRLS MAKE GRAVES - Liquid Courage (D)
Two classics in one song: first and foremost the band Pretty Girls Make Graves, who've been featured here before, but it's always nice to welcome them back. Then there's the site we pulled this from: Epitonic, an incredibly rich source of legal MP3's and one of the inspirations for Radio Kurtodrome. After all this is edition 50, a time to celebrate and honour.
NEAL POLLACK - Memories Of Times Square (The Dildo Song) (D)
Who's Neal Pollack? Frankly, we don't know. We know he's born in 1970 and his site tells his all about his piercings and favourite sexual position. He's written a book, a "rock'n'roll novel" by the name of "Never Mind The Pollacks" and an accompanying album. Which also features this song.
THE DECEMBERISTS - Here I Dreamt I Was An Architect (D)
We knew that The Decemberists were from Portland, but what we didn't know was that the band features one Rachel Blumberg, also a member of Norfolk & Western (whom you'll find in our archives). The fine label Kill Rock Stars distributes their albums.
HER SPACE HOLIDAY - Tech Romance (D)
Her Space Holiday is the musical project of producer Marc Bianchi. "Tech Romance" can be found on his latest release (The Young Machines), which is distributed by Midheaven.
764HERO & MODEST MOUSE - Whenever You See Fit (DJ Dynomite D Mix) (D)
Here's a song from the EP Wherever You See Fit by Modest Mouse and 764HERO. Both bands were distributed by Seattle's Suicide Squeeze label and the EP was a result of a national tour together and also featured two remixes, of which this is one.
UNDER BYEN - Det Er Mig Der Holder Trerne Sammen (D)
Under Byen have been before and certainly deserved a second song. We opted for the title track of their 2002 release Det Er Mig Der holder Trerne Sammen. This is excellent, heart-breaking stuff.
SIGUR RS - Untitled #8 (D)
That it's not easy to call all your tracks "untitled" is what Icelandic Sigur Rs discovered with their album ( ) (which in itself is quite a tongue twister). Anyway, the song you're about to hear, "untitled #8" is also known as "Popplagi" (a.k.a. "The Pop Song"). Sigur Rs news flash: "Bassist Georg has had a baby girl! Her name is Elena Holm and was born [on March 11] in Spain at 11:43, weighing at 4.13 kg and is 51 cm long." Congratulations.
KIMONO - Japanese policeman (D)
Iceland must be one of the few countries where you have more bands than people. One of the latest export products is Kimono. Their album was titled Mineur Agressif and Bad Taste Ltd. were kind enough to distribute it.
CALLA - Fear of fireflies (D)
"Fear of Fireflies" by Calla (most remembered here for their excellent "Televised" song) is a track off their second album, Scavengers, which was released in 2001.
TORIKO NUJIKO - Sea (D)
'Sea' will accompany you for the next 11 minutes, though with Toriko Nujiko's soothing sounds it's always hard to say whether those eleven minutes feel like much shorter or much longer. Toriko Nujiko is still distributed by the Austrian Mego label.
GODSPEED YOU! BLACK EMPEROR - Lift Yr Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (D)
And what better way to end a classic episode (the 50th) of Radio Kurtodrome than by playing a classic GYBE track? "Listening to Montreal nine-piece Godspeed You Black Emperor! is a bit like opening up the face of a clock and trying to make sense of its works." That's how Godspeed are described on their Epitonic page. This download, by the way, is brought to you by Epitonic. Godspeed You! Black Emperor (it's amazing how the exclamation mark in the band's name seems to keep moving, I hope we placed it right) are distributed by Kranky. That's it for this XL edition of Radio Kurtodrome. We'll be back in ten days. Take care!
