Radio Kurtodrome 46
New fine records by a.o. At The Close Of Every Day and Mauro, but where's the web proof? Never mind, we'll fill half an hour of online music (streams and legal MP3s) anyhow. It gives us time to play a few older tracks.
BARNES & BARNES - Fishheads (D)
Fishheads, fishheads, roly poly fishheads, fishheads, fishheads, eat them up, yum. What else is there to say except that we found this on the Fishy page of the Krayup site. Legendary madness from the 80s and a valuable lesson: you can take a fishhead out to see a movie without having to pay for it.
THE NOTWIST - Chemicals
Two streams in this edition (and both courtesy of the VPRO). The first one is an older one from The Notwist, to prove to most of you these Germans had a life before the excellent Neon Golden. I think this was the song that introduced me to The Notwist.
LAMBCHOP - Something's going on (D)
All praise to Kurt Wagner and co for releasing two Lambchop albums at the same time and calling them Aw C'Mon! and No You C'Mon!. Based on just hearing this one song, it's fair to say that Lambchop are on the familiar paths again.
HER SPACE HOLIDAY - Sleepy California (D)
V2 Germany tells us on its site: "If you haven't bought the Her Space Holiday album yet, here's a wonderful track to download." Marc Bianchi's latest release is called The Young Machines and the track is, indeed, wonderful.
PAT McDONALD - Strange Love (D)
Since the 80s have returned, we thought it was high time for our share. Take Pat McDonald and Depeche Mode and what do you get? Pat McDonald used to be married to Barbara and in Timbuk 3 ("The future's so bright, I gotta wear shades", no?), but the band ended together with the marriage. Pat's first solo album title gave us more information than we needed (Pat McDonald sleeps with his guitar), but 'Strange Love' is from the tribute album Strange Love: PM does DM (out on Ulftone). This will sound completely different from what you'd expect from a Timbuk 3 member covering Depeche Mode, but a thing of beauty nonetheless.
MC 900 FT. JESUS - The City Sleeps (D)
And now that we're in the past, remember the earlier days of rap and hiphop, before it got all sexist, commercial and crap? Yes, a long long time ago rap sounded like MC 900 ft. Jesus and the city... well, let's say it still slept. Maybe that's why the album title was Welcome To My Dream.
BOBBY CONN AND THE GLASS GYPSIES - We Come In Peace (D)
Ah yes, Bobby Conn, he of the weird songs and costumes. He used to be played a lot on alternative radio stations when those still existed. But what's that? Pay attention to the lyrics of the brand new Bobby Conn... "We are your friends; we come in peace. We brought our guns to set you free. No need to run, no need to hide. We only kill our enemies; Our cause is good, our cause is just. So why mistrust our obvious success?" The Homeland is out on Thrill Jockey.
THE BARCELONA PAVILLION - How Are You People Going To Have Fun If None Of You People Ever Particate (D)
Last time we had this remarkable cover of "Hey Ya!", courtesy of someone nicknamed The Blankket. All we know about The Blankket is that he (?) is a member of The Barcelona Pavillion. Sadly that's also all we can tell you about The Barcelona Pavillion, but this MP3 with a rather long title will do, I guess.
APPARAT ORGAN QUARTET - Stereo Rock'n'Roll
As we've mentioned before, Apparat Organ Quartet were one of the highlights of 2003's Pukkelpop, which is a bit odd for an updated Kratwerk clone from Iceland, especially if they're playing at 2 p.m. While we were enjoying them, we noticed this song was a crowd pleaser. So here we go in stereo... but it's not rock'n'roll. Radio Kurtodrome will return in approximately 10 days.
