Radio Kurtodrome 35: Les Nuits Botanique
Les Nuits Botanique is the last of the big summer festivals and when we say 'big', we mean... 11 nights of concerts in four rooms. At least two bands per room per night. You do the math. We'll give you some of our favourites.
SHARKO - Tequila and 23rd (D)
Ah, the wicked David Bartholom has returned with a new album, his third and bearing the innovative title Sharko 3. It's so new we haven't found an audio sample, so let's dig back to Sharko's past. "Tequila and 23rd" is off his debut album Feuded. (Orangerie, Sep 17)
ELLIOT MURPHY - Pieces of my Heart (D)
On Elliot Murphy's site we read "Free distribution of these files is encouraged. Commercial distribution is strictly forbidden." See, that's the way we like it. Here's a demo of one of his songs and do note that Murphy will perform on September 18 (Serres).
JOHN CUNNINGHAM - You Shine (D)
Performing right after the Willard Grant Conspiracy, it's the man many people liken to The Beatles. Happy Go-Unlucky is John Cunningham's fifth album (Rotonde, Sep 19).
JAN JELINEK - My Favourite Shop (D)
Straight from Amazon Germany: a track called "My Favourite Shop". And then they say irony is dead. His latest album is called La Nouvelle Pauvret and you'll be able to see him in the Muse (Sep 19) alongside Oval, Four Tet (featured in our previous edition) and ...
POLE -
Strand (D)
Yes. Pole a.k.a. Stefan Betke is there too. We read somewhere he's "probably best known for his minimal dub sounds between the clicks and cuts of modern electronica".
PITCHTUNER -
Shocco
Because there are exceptions to every rule and because frankly Doxa faded this teaser out so professionally we could be fooled into thinking this was just a short song and because we like Pitchtuner and think there's not enough plugging going on, here's a song from their limited edition 12" (500 vinyl copies only). Catch them live on September 19 (Orangerie).
CLIENT - Man Overboard (use "save target as" to play)
Client (Orangerie, Sep 19) is the girl duo that were the first signing of Andy Fletcher (also present that night and known for being in Depeche Mode).
LE PEUPLE DE L'HERBE - Chienne2Guerre (D)
"Man walks into a bar... Then he explodes so there ain't no 'ha ha'." Yes, the Peuple de l'Herbe aren't always about fun, but rest assured: the concert (Sep 19, Serres) will be quite good. Also performing that night in that room: the legendary Master of Dub Adrian Sherwood.
SPIRITUALIZED - She Kissed Me (D)
Spiritualized are back and sound quite energetic. Here's the "She Kissed Me (And it felt like a hit)" track we found at Insound. Spiritualized perform in the Serres (Sep 20).
GUIDED BY VOICES - My Kind of Soldier (D)
Earthquake Glue is the title of the latest GBV album and it's a bit poppier than some of their work and very enjoyable. This is also the Voices' latest single. Enjoy and/or watch them in the Serres (Sep 20). Do note that Chris Whitley and Sandy Dillon play that same night in the Rotonde, so think carefully about which ticket you'll buy.
PEACHES - Diddle My Skittle (D)
Peaches has a new album, Fatherfucker, out but here's an older tune. She'll entertain the Serres (Sep 21) together with Broadcast and UNKLE.
MIAM MONSTER MIAM - I Love French Sex (D)
These days Miam Monster Miam focuses less on electronics, which is why he'll be an excellent support for An Pierl (with choir!), but do remember that we're now playing him right after Peaches. Anyway, Sep 21 at the Cirque Royale comes heavily recommended by almost anyone.
TELSTAR - Le Moribond (D)
We're not that enthusiastic about Sep 22's lineups, but we'll conclude this edition with Telstar's cover of a Jacques Brel. Because it's the Brel year in Belgium and because Telstar will play at Les Nuits Botanique (Rotonde, Sep 22).
