Radio Kurtodrome 32: Pukkelpop (2)
Ten days ago we had a look at Thursday's lineup and now it's time for the bands that'll try and swoon the Belgian kids on Friday. More rap and hip hop and the festival day that doesn't interest us least. Still, this is what we picked up.
GRANDADDY - Now it's on (D)
Here's a track from Grandaddy's latest album, Sumday.
GOLDFRAPP - Utopia (remix)
In 2000 Alison Goldfrapp released her debut album Felt Mountain, the most famous track of which was "Utopia". Mick Harvey made a remix you'll hear now courtesy of Mute.
THE RAVEONETTES - Attack of the Ghost Riders (D)
Yes yes, an MP3 of a so-called alternative duo. The Kills didn't even mention they were coming to Pukkelpop, so we didn't bother looking for a song. Thank God this Danish duo is still around.
HOT HOT HEAT - Get In Or Get Out (D)
What does Insound have to say about Hot Hot Heat? "In May of 2002, Hot Hot Heat headed into Vancouver's Mushroom Studios to record a new full-length with NW recording legend Jack Endino. The result, Make up the Breakdown, shows a seemingly effortless ability to craft melody, the kind that doesnt merely get stuck in your head, but that moves in, puts down roots, starts a family. [...] More than New Wave revivalists with an innate talent for catchy songs, Hot Hot Heat blend angular post-punk twitch with danceable pop." Well, that's pretty positive, not?
THE BLACK KEYS - Busted (D)
"This duo from Akron, Ohio, is formed by 22 year old Dan Auerbach (howling and Harmony electric guitar) and 21 year old Patrick Carney (28 inch kick drum, recording laboratory). The Black Keys produces its own brand of stripped down rock'n'roll that combines Memphis grit, Motor City stomp and Mississippi hollers." (MP3 and quote from label Alive-Total Energy)
THE SOLEDAD BROTHERS - Teenage Heart Attack
The band includeds Meg White's boyfriend, Jack White's flatmate and a qualified doctor among their number. Their music has been called "feral, crunching, blues-inflected rock'n'roll", but all I hear in this song is a Rolling Stones ripoff.
