Radio Kurtodrome 27
Because there are so many bands, here's the second part of our Dour special. Who's playing there on Saturday and Sunday? Let the music speak for itself.

If you'd like to look at the lineup, you'd better do that here (or here if you want the Dutch version). Here at Radio Kurtodrome we'll just pick out the artists with (D)ownloadable MP3s or streams on their site. Day 1 and Day 2 have been covered in Radio Kurtodrome 26.
Saturday 12
CATO SALSA EXPERIENCE - Smile at me (D)
The Cato Salsa Experience is named after singer Cato Thomassen. This Norwegian trio will shake you up if you're around the Last Arena at 13:40.
THE MELVINS - Revolve (D)
A legend in the Last Arena: The Melvins from Aberdeen in America, the same place that gave you Nirvana and one of Kurt Cobain's influence. Unlike the latter, the Melvins are still alive and around and to be enjoyed in Dour. Tattoo "10pm" on your forehead (or rather some place where you can see it yourself). One Melvin, Kevin Rutmanis, will return later that day with Mike Patton and Duane Denison (Jesus Lizard) as part of Tomahawk. Since their MP3 is called "Rape this day" and we sorta had it with cheap references to rape, we won't give you the MP3, just mention that Tomahawk will play in the Last Arena at midnight.
MAXIMILIAN HECKER - My love for you is insane (D)
You might remember Maximilian Hecker from edition 7. Here you'll hear a more intense Maxi (as the Germans like to call him) with more energy and more beats. The Germans think he's very cute. To check if that's true, direct yourself to the Popbitch Zone where Maximilian Hecker will play at 14:30. Then stick around for Bob Log III (15:50) whose "Boob Scotch" is to be admired in our Video Archive. And if you're immobilized after Bob Log III, you'll see Woven Hand too. They'll be featured in our next edition, so instead we'll have a look around... All day long there's noise in the Canibal Blue Stage where you'll see a set of hardcore bands. Unless you want to hear some reggae, then you should go to the Red Frequency Stage. Headliners there are Max Romeo and Femi Kuti. No sounds were available. And no sounds of Magnus either. The collaboration between dEUS's Tom Barman and CJ Bolland will perform in the Popbitch Zone at 22:30.
DJ GRAZZHOPPA'S DJ BIGBAND - Doom (D)
La Petite Maison Dans La Prairie subjects you to a day of hiphop, making Radio Kurtodrome all the more glad we'll be far far away from Dour that day. One exception we would like you to hear is DJ Grazzhoppa who formed a collective with DJ Smimooz, DJ XXL, DJ Menno, DJ Yzerbeat and DJ Lamont. Grazz and Fabrizio Cassol created a set of turntables with a notes system (don't ask us what that means) and the 6 DJs will try and create some music. The goal is to create a piece of music by 15 DJs and 2004 should be when it's finished. In the meantime, here's a solo piece by Grazzhoppa.
OXBOW - Sawmill (D)
And this is where it gets experimental: The Magic Tent. Another Eugene on the stage that day: Eugene Robinson of Oxbow. The band have worked together with a.o. Steve Albini. The album is called An Evil Heat and the track is called "Sawmill". They'll make their way to the stage at 16:10 and will warm up for a most interesting combination: Caspar Brvtzmann and FM Einheit (17:50), the son of saxophonist Peter Brotzmann and a member of Einstrzende Neubauten.
THE EX - Karaoke Blackout (D)
Raxinasky will open the Magic Tent, but their alleged cocktail of metal, jazz and dadasm made us think "hrm, bad Ex". Good Ex is better and wouldn't you know it, The Ex themselves are coming to Dour. Half past seven is when their set starts. Now here's one of the few bands that makes us feel sorry we won't be going to Dour that day (but duty, in the form of Rock Herk, calls).
Sunday 13
THERAPY? - Die Laughing (live) (D)
Therapy? in Austria and not on Rock Werchter?? We didn't know that was possible, but there they are: The Red Frequency Stage, Sunday, 9pm. Other bands on that same stage that same day include Admiral Freebee, The Henry Rollins Band and Sparklehorse. Also open to the public: The Last Arena with a list of forgettable bands till it's 8pm. Then it's time for The Wailers (indeed, them) and Stereo MCs.
LOFOFORA - Visceral (D)
The Canibal Blue Stage with an array of metal bands on Sunday, is not really our thing, but we did enjoy this track by Lofofora (22:50). They've been making French metal since 1989.
GIRLS IN HAWAII - Bees & Butterflies (D)
Onto the Popbitch Zone now and we're minding the gap between the metal above and the pop below. Here's a powerful pop song by Girls in Hawaii, favourites of the Dour Festival, we may say and as long as they keep getting better, we don't mind. Check their progression by listening to this MP3 (brought to you by Webzine Nameless) and by checking them out in Dour at 17:55.
AUSTIN LACE - Education First (D)
Austin Lace are from Brussels, but claim on their site their first album (Commodore Pace) made it to the playlist of Belgian, Dutch, French and Canadian college radios (hey Austin, we have a way of fact-checking that last reference, you know!). Nevertheless welcome them to the Popbitch Zone at 13:20.
YO LA TENGO - Little Eyes (D)
Hurrah, Yo La Tengo are back with a new album, Summer Sun. Let's celebrate with an MP3. You'll see them in the Zone at ten to ten.
DLEK - Spiritual Healing (D)
Dlek released a debut record in 1998, but to be honest, I'd never heard of him. Still, this is the sort of rap that we don't mind hearing (listen to that guitar!). That's right, more hiphop - and consorts like R&B and nu-soul (?) - in La Petite Maison de la Prairie on Sunday. Dlek will perform at 16:00. Stick around for the next band but apart from those Jazzyfatnastees (two women who come approved by The Roots) there isn't much on that stage we want to recommend. Maybe Cannibal Ox at 21:40.
COWBOYS FROM OUTER SPACE - You choke me up (D)
And finally The Last Arena where you'll hear almost as many bands as genres on Sunday. Omar Perry, son of Lee 'Scratch', will guide you through the latest hours of the festival (till 3am), but before there are several reggae bands, there's rock in all its forms. E.g. these weird people from Marseille (14:00) who produce a melange of psycho, garage, punk and surf and are about as alien as Men or Astromen?.
SIOEN - Sixteen Ladies (D)
This particular MP3 caused us some trouble to find (the official site doesn't link to the sound files anymore), so we hope they don't mind us using this song for Radio Kurtodrome (like we used the excellent 'See you naked' in edition 20!!), but we really would like to have more than sixteen ladies present at Sioen's concert (he plays at the Last Arena at 12:30). Sioen's debut album is out in Belgium and comes recommended. And while these are beautiful tones to finish this two-parter Dour special, we would like to tell you that Enon will also be there in Dour's Last Arena (17:00). But we'll feature them in Radio Kurtodrome 28 which will have a look at Rock Herk and the Cactus Festival. Radio Kurtodrome 28 will be online on July 10 or 11. Enjoy Dour!
