M E T R O C O N, ' 0 6
Thursday I packed on Wednesday. Xandra said they wanted to leave between eight and eleven the next day so dad called them up at a quarter to nine and we picked them up some spray on polyurethane and got there at around nine thirty. We (Xandra, Xandra's Mom, Xandra's Dad, and I) finally left at like... 2:30. You see; Xandra had to finish PACKING and finish the rest of her Chi (from Chobits)(but this Chi was the version from Tsubasa) crystals. So my job was loading the car with our stuff. We ate Wendy's at around that time. Xandra and I made the back seat a second home. It was scattered with tons of our stuff (mostly hers). She was finishing up Anna Koyama's (from Shaman King) prayer beads and bracelet. We stopped at a pit stop around four and got to Xandra's aunt's house at 5. We had dinner and then went to her grandma's house. I reinforced the hem work on my Yuuen (from Wild Rock) outfit and since my top shirt for Duo was coming undone (and that's a manufactured shirt!), I redid it too. We stayed up till one-thirty working on Chi's crystals.
Friday I got up at seven. I took a shower and changed into my Duo cosplay. Xandra got up at eight and changed and then finished up Chi's outfit. Xandra's Dad had gotten up when I did and had started on breakfast. After breakfast, I began to load the car again. When we were all ready, we piled in and out. We were on the road for about three hours during which Xandra got a phone call from Kamui. I told her, 'Xandra, if you want to wear Chi today, you've got to get your ears done!!' She just laughed that off. By the time we got to the convention center it was... like 12. Xandra had one ear done. She was still in street clothes so it was fine. We went by the convention center to get our registration badges. I, however, was suppose to wait for Jairo to get there so I could steal Shinbo's badge. (All of Xandra's friends) We couldn't find Jairo and the others so I was getting mad. However, when Xandra, Kamui, and Xandra's Mom got out of line, Xandra's Mom hands me a badge. I blinked. She said they gave her an extra because she's the mom, you know? In case her mom need's to get to her. Xandra's Mom said she and Xandra's Dad were going to check into the hotel so we went to go find Jairo. We went to the entrance ceremony and decided we didn't like it. We went to the dealer's room instead. When I was talking about Wild Rock to one of the vendors, she was like, "Oh My God! You have to come here so I can take a picture!" Wild Rock was one of her favorite Yaoi manga. When we finally found Jairo, I got my official badge and we made our way to the hotel to get our stuff and give Xandra's Mom the badge she gave me. So, right as we get to the doors of the hotel, guess whom I see? Scott McNeil. He comes out of the Westin wearing his cowboy hat, red plaid shirt with '02' on the back, black jeans, and his cowboy boots. Same old long hair and same old backpack. I go, "Yo, Scott McNeil, What's up?" He replies, "What's up?" really happily, like he always does. I go, "Guess who I am?" He says flatly, "I dunno. Who are you?" I face faulted. "I'm Duo, dude!" He sighs like 'Oh. Right. Duh,' and says, "Aside from THAT." I blink. "Oh. J-- V--." "J-- B--?" "No. V-V--. With a V." "B--?" "No. V--. With a V." "Ohhhhh. With a B." I face faulted again. "With a V!!!! V as in Victor!" "Ohhhhh... With a V!" "Yes!" "With a V." "Yeah." "How you doing With a V?" I face faulted again. "You're doing this to get at me, right?" "Yep. And it's working." So then he had to inspect the goods (and by goods I mean my HAIR). And he says, "I must commend you for having the real thing." "Thank you." So then he says he's got to get to his panel and I had to go get my stuff and put it in MY room because I wasn't staying with Xandra and her mom and dad, I was staying with her friend Lia and Nicole and Lia's mom. So we go down to the parking lot get our stuff and I get the room number from Lia's mom--but I didn't get a KEY. So I go all the way up there and sit there for like, ten minutes knocking--not getting an answer. So I go down to Xandra's room and have them call Lia's mom. She's there. She didn't hear me. I blinked. So I go BACK UP to the TENTH floor (Xandra was on the fourth) and drop my stuff off at the room. I run out and into an elevator so I can catch Scott's panel which started at six (it was 5:45). I'm in the elevator with one other otaku, a nicely dressed old woman and two other nicely dressed men. The old woman says, "What's going down at the convention center?" The other otaku says, "It's a convention for anime which is Japanese cartoons." She says, "Oh. Well that's nice. What type of things do you do?" I say, "They have dances and panels for the voice actors that do the different characters and things like that. I'm trying to get out of here so I can go down to the convention center for a panel then rush back up here to change into a ball gown for a ball they're throwing." She says in reply, "Oh! And I'm just going to my grandson's wedding!" We laughed and I said, "Well, Congratulations!" Then the elevator dings and I run out of it, out of the hotel, out of the courtyard and over the bridge so that I can get in the convention center through the side doors and down an elevator. As I'm going down the elevator, whom do I see? Scott McNeil. He's surrounded by groupies (of course) and trying (not very hard, of course) to make to (I assumed) his panel room. I get down the elevator and say, "Yo, Scott, your panel hasn't started yet, right?" "If it has I hope it's going well." I laughed. "Panel Room 1, right?" "That's what I've been told." So we walk. And it's awkwardly silent. He says, "With a 'V', right?" "Yep. With a V" "You get your point across very well." "I try." So we actually GET into the panel room and he goes, "So, as you all know, I'm Scott McNeil. If you thought this was somebody else's panel please leave now." Someone got up and left. "See!? I told you! They hate me!" he yells. We all laughed. And he's talking about which voices he did and how many years this and that ect. Then he says, "So. I've now come to the awkward stage of this panel. I've run out of things to say! So, it's time for the lifesaver. God, I hate saying this. 'Who has any questions?'" Hands go flying. "Why doesn't that ever work for me?" They ask him stuff like, where was he born? (Brisbane, Australia) and what not. You should know a couple of things at this point. 1. He's got a coconut with him for some Scott McNeil reason (I mean, he doesn't really need one) and he said it (apparently) tells him to do things... evil things. 2. There's a kid (bout eighteen) playing with a crystal ball (and I don't mean throwing it and catching it or anything; he's... you'd have to see The Labyrinth). One of the questions asked was, "Are you ever going to have children?" He looked absolutely shocked. He pressed his hand to his chest and mumbled loudly, 'I didn't think I could...' while I yelled, 'Ask the coconut!' He didn't but I thought it was funny. At some point someone asked him what he did in his spare time. He likes to play video games. He plays WoW (World of Warcraft). If you've never heard anything about WoW, this means nothing to you. I, however, have a billion friends that play WoW and want to too. Now, about the guy with the crystal ball... I got fed up with his hand tricks and yelled, "What are you doing?" And he promptly explained that it was some kinetic energy thing. So Scott says, "Here. Gimme that and let me show you guys a few things." So he takes the acrylic ball and just moves it around his hand. We all laugh at him and he gives the ball back. At this point, its raring seven. I have to leave soon so I can change into my dress and wings and make it back to the convention center in time to catch the fantasy masquerade ball. So at seven THIRTY I raise my hand and ask him if he's going to the masquerade ball. He replied he'd like to. So I've got to go. I get up; I leave. I RUN to the hotel and get up to the room and guess what? SHE'S NOT THERE! I thought, "I am sooo screwed." So I go to Xandra's room. "She's not there." They call her. She's there now. So I go back up. I get in. I start pulling off what I can without being indecent and gathering up what I need for the ball. I get everything on and let me tell you... that was HARD. I had to get on the dress (which was my Goth dress--the purple and black one), then the wings, then my purse (which had to go over the one wing), then my mask (I have a lot of hair), and then the shall (which couldn't go over anything so it had to go under the wings). And I still need to get my shoes on! So I get there... in heels. Walking. Over a bridge. Running. Oh god it sucked. But I got there in one piece. I got in line. Waited. Got in the ballroom. Waited. Waited for Xandra inside while the plot was being laid out. (Ever play FF9? Well, that was the plot.) So we find a table near the stage to chill. We've got Xandra, Kamui, Jairo, Lia, Matt, James, and Nicole. We got a balloon and tried to keep it in the air. Then, when that became challenge-less, we added another until we had four balloons going. Eventually, Xandra and Kamui went to dance to the Electric Slide and Cha-cha Slide and whatnot. James asked Nicole to dance. Jairo and Lia were already going out so they danced and in the end, it was just Matt and I. We are nothing but friends and since I'm already going out with Seth, I wouldn't have yes even IF he asked me. But he's not the type to dance either. So we sat there singing the played songs and watching the others dance. It was fun, actually. It sounds horribly boring, but it was fun. Ten minutes before the ball was going to end, Xandra, Kamui, and I ducked out and changed for the rave. Greg Ayres was doing the DJ-ing. He's the voice actor for Son Goku from Saiyuki, Kyohei from Burst Angel, and Shinpachi Nakakura from Peace Maker Kurogane. We stayed for two hours and when Greg wasn't the DJ anymore, we left. We were just sitting there watching everyone else anyways. I went to bed around two thirty.
Saturday I woke up at eight. Lia, Nicole, Jairo and Kitty decided we should go to breakfast. So we did. Afterwards, Nicole wanted to try and cash some checks. We WALKED to the Publix and they couldn't cash the checks so we walked back to the convention center, which we passed on our way there anyways. And I did all this in Yuuen's girl outfit. Think about it. I'm wearing a prehistoric female outfit. It was very revealing. Anyways! So we got to the convention center and got in line for Anime Human Chess. It's like the Renaissance Festival's Human Chess but with anime characters. It was HILARIOUS. I would tell you every little detail about it, but half of it I don't remember. Even the basic plot of it is whacked. It went something like this: "Yesterday, at opening ceremonies, a book was delivered to Tohru Honda. The book turned out to be the Deathnote, a notebook that can kill anyone by writing their names down. Yusuke Yurameshi, a spirit detective, agreed to retrieve the book and return it to the Shinigami world. However, Yomiko Readman and Miss. Deep, from the British library, want to quarantine the book to prevent it from future use. Yusuke handcuffed himself to Tohru to prevent her from miss using the notebook." And the chess pieces included (on Yusuke's side): Yusuke, Kuwabara, Kurama, Hiei (from Yu Yu Hakusho), Yuki, Kyo (from Fruits Basket), Ranma, Ukyo, Ryoga, Shampoo (from Ranma 1/2), Sakura/Kero (they were a set) (from Card Captor Sakura), Kazuma (from s-CRY-ed) (don't ask, I don't know), Ran Kotobuki (from SuperGALS), Sakaki, Chiyo, and Tomo (from Azumanga Daioh). Their extras were Female Ranma, Akane (from Ranma 1/2), Tohru (from Fruits Basket), Snow Card, and Life-size Kero (from Card Captor Sakura). On Yomiko's side: Yomiko, Deep, Anita (from R.O.D. [Read or Die]), Asuka (from Neon Genesis Evangelion), Duo (from Gundam Wing), Ginji, Ban (from Getbackers), Reno, Rude, Elena, Tseng, (from Final Fantasy VII), Gally (from Battle Angel Alita), Excel (from Excel Saga), M-66 Robot (from M-66 Black Magic), Robin (from Witch Hunter Robin), and Ed (from Full Metal Alchemist). Their extras were: Paper Gryphon, the three sisters from R.O.D. TV, and Rufus from FF7. I'll have to call you to tell you the really detailed version of the match. There was two parts between Ginji and Ban where Ginji got his ass kicked and Ban carried him off stage (vice versa for Ban). Yusuke called Shampoo the 'girl with the knockers'. Duo sucked. Now, I don't mean this in a bad way, but he was black. His hair was coming from in between the hat, not his head, and he wasn't bouncy or loud. O.o He sucked. Tseng was kicking EVERYONE'S ass. M-66 went crazy, so half the match was getting it to shut down. When Excel fought Shampoo, Shampoo kissed her and walked off. Yuki and Kyo kept fighting each other even though they weren't suppose to fight each other (they WERE on the same side). Ryoga was great. He was totally in character. He got on the board from the wrong side, kept facing the wrong way, and going back to the wrong square. Kyo had to set him straight every time. Kyo was called 'loudmouth'. Hiei and Kurama got their asses kicked. Oh! When Kyo was fighting Ban, Ban made him hit Tohru. He was silent and then he turned around, punching Ban to the floor, saying 'You made me kill Tohru!' and proceeded to punch him to death. When Ranma (guy) got moved, and there was no fight he said 'There's nobody there!' Yusuke replied, 'Yeah'. When Ranma turned into a girl, everyone said, 'Who are you?' and she replied, 'I'm Ranma!' 'Ranma's a guy.' 'Just trust me'. When Kyo was to fight Excel, he roundhouse kicked the air because she ducked to look at a bug. Then she dodged his stomp because said bug moved. Then Yuki decided he was an imbecile that he needed a lesson and was fighting him. When Kyo went to kick him, Yuki caught it and Excel went through the bridge that had been formed with them watching her. They continued fighting and when they did it again, she went through again with a bug catching net. Ran got Reno's number. Deep almost got kicked out for having a firearm. Ed got his ass kicked by Tseng. Rufus turned out to be Light from Deathnote. Mr. Letterman (from R.O.D.) turned out to be Geo from Neon Genesis Evangelion. By the end of the chess match everyone died so Belldandy (from Ah! My Goddess!) came and revived everyone. Brandon showed up towards the middle and the ending didn't really matter! ^_^ Xandra's parents called and they wanted us to go get lunch with them. So we were going to the hotel to meet up with Xandra's parents who were taking us, and in order to get to the bridge to the hotel, there's a small courtyard. So, here I am, in my Yuuen outfit, with nothing more then GAUZE on my feet. I'm like, "Ow, Ow, Ow, Ow..." and I'm trying to get my sandals on but they strung through my purse straps so I'm trying to get the purse off but my shall starts falling and I say, "Kamui-chan! Get that!" So she grabs my purse and I yell, "No, the shall!" And then we see Scott. And he yells from across the courtyard, "Oh My God! She's falling apart!" really dramatically, I might add. I've got one shoe on and when I got the second on I said, "Scott, I want you to sign my Gundam Wing Card Deck." And he says sure. So he signed my Gundam Wing Card Deck (With a "V" You--go ROCK! Scott McNeil) and I asked for his e-mail address and he gave it to me (I LOVE getting e-mails I just suck at returning them) and he gave me a hug (we told him we were going to lunch) and said "I'll see you on the inside." So then we had Subway and came back and went to the Cosplay Contest. It was great! There were a lot of really funny skits. One was "Naru-tarded Theme Songs". They got tons of songs and put their cast (Naruto, Sasuke, Orochimaru, Choji, and Kakashi) into tons of appropriate scenes. The last of in the contest was Pocky Man! He was awesome! He danced to Tenjo Tenge's opening theme AND came back for an encore. It was hilarious. After that, we were going to go somewhere but Steven (Xandra's friend that runs half the Con) said we should watch the Anime Idol (like American Idol but Anime style, which is better). One of his friends was going to perform a Gackt song ("Hoshi no Suna", No. 6 on the Crescent album). Before the judges got there (Scott was the main judge) and the technical difficulties got straightened out, DJ Shadowfax was getting bored so he picked on us to entertain him. He got a beach ball and tossed it into the crowd and told them not to let it touch the floor. They sucked at it. I whispered to Xandra, "I wish they'd throw it over here. Yesterday at the Masquerade was the best!" Then Shadowfax started pulling people from the audience to perform to songs that he had. The first was Time Warp. Others included the Electric Slide and The Chicken Dance. I had to perform to the Cha-Cha Slide. He pointed at me and I had to get up there. So I'm up there bouncing around waiting and it does and I was not to bad except I wouldn't put my 'hands on my knees'. Steven got up there and did it with me--I was so relieved I wouldn't be up there alone. So this continued until the technical difficulties had been straighten up. The first song was Gackt's Birdcage (which was the first song I ever heard from Gackt and made me fall in love with his music). It was done really good. The second song was Miyavi's Jibun Kakumei 2003. The girl sucked. It wasn't her fault: Miyavi has a weird voice that you just can't reproduce. There were more (I just don't remember the statistics). One other was a girl who sang Passion by Utada Hikaru. It's Kingdom Hearts II's Japanese opening. She kicked ass! It was great (and she won Judge's favorite). There was this other girl who sang Hikari by Utada Hikaru: Kingdom Hearts's Japanese opening. I. Wanted. To. CRY. It was so HORRIBLE. I wanted to get up there, snatch the mic, beat her with it, and then perform the song all over again. SHE FORGOT THE "kansei sasenaide" chorus and went back to the "donna tokidatte" one. So I sung the song, the PROPER way, loudly, anyway. I think I might enter Anime Idol next year just so I can show the half that sucked how to use their diaphragm properly. Scott gets up with a chick that's supposed to be another judge and they announce the winners. At the very end, when all the judging's done, Scott gives a speech about how everyone was really courageous because it takes a lot of guts to get up and stage and perform in front of a billion people you don't know. Then Shadowfax plays the "I'm Too Sexy" Song (by Right Said Fred). Scott's doing the sprinkler or something and I yell, "Strip!" because if you're dancing to the 'I'm Too Sexy' Song, you gotta strip. Afterwards, when he was back down, I said, "Scott, you're suppose to strip when the I'm Too Sexy song comes on!" and he starts to pull up his shirt. We all laughed. Immediately after Anime Idol, Steven says to me, "Why, whenever I look at you, I felt like I've known you forever? Like we're good old friends?" I said I didn't know. He turned to Xandra, "Did you send me her picture or something?" Xandra said she might have and I looked shocked. After Anime Idol, I hung out in the dealer's room and around seven, went back to my hotel room to change for the Matsuri Festival. I wore my yukata and two bottom layers to it. At this point, (after Duo's cosplay and the ball) I had completely ditched shoes. So I was in my yukata outfit and bare foot. We're (Nicole, Lia, Jack, Jairo, Chris, Brandon, and I) waiting for PLID to finish up so the Matsuri Festival can begin. The Matsuri Festival was suppose to be like a JPop-y sorta rave. While waiting, I spotted Roko. Roko had been left with Diego's things after he went to play "Hide and Seek". Yes, we played Hide and Seek at MetroCon. So I walked up to Roko and said, "Hey Roko, did you find Diego?" she pointed at Diego. "Oh. Diego! You're an ass for leaving your stuff with Roko!" We all laughed it off. Then I hear, "Oh my God! You're gorgeous!" I turn, and find Steven. I blinked. "Huh?" "You look amazing in that!" "Oh... uh... thank you." Then I walked off and sat with the others again. Meanwhile, I'm trying to get a hold of Xandra to find out if she's going to the raves and whatnot, or not. I do. She's not. Lovely. So I chill with Nicole and the others talking about cosplay and songs we like. Then the Matsuri Festival started so we went inside. I wasn't really into it so at one thirty I left. I got a room key from Nicole and walked myself back to the Westin. When I got to my room, Lia's mom was like, "Where are the others?" I told her I had walked home. She looked appalled. "You shouldn't have done that." "I'm sorry, I won't ever do it again." She accepted that and I went down to Xandra's room to return her phone. I then went back up to mine, took a shower, and went to bed.
Sunday Sunday I was suppose to go to church at nine. Leave eight forty five, get there at nine, and come back at ten--except I woke up AT nine. So I gather up all my stuff, cause Xandra's mom wanted us to put our stuff in the car now instead of having to worry about it at check out. So we did. Steven had told us that we had to come back for the Encore Presentation of the Anime Human Chess match. So we did. It was almost even better going again. At the end, though, they had funny little photo ops. Like Reno handcuffed to Ran. After that, I went to the dealer's room to shop. I had already decided the Sunday was going to be my shopping day. I bought BUCK-TICK's Monalisa OVER DRIVE album and Someday's Dreamers manga Vol. 1. Kareno bought me Gackt's MOON, Mirage of Blaze ~ Rebels of the River Edge (OVA), and a Duo pin (the one where he's yawning). Roko bought me xxxHOLiC ~Manatsu no Yoru no Yume~ (the movie). I bought Ryu (my brother) a red Link pin (the one from Four Swords). Then they announced that Scott was going to have a signing session in the dealer's room. So I talked Roko into going with me to annoy Scotty. We got in line and all I had for him to sign was a free plastic fan. I shrugged, sure, why not? We were about the third group in line when he brought out GIANT POCKY and gave it to a few of his fans. I yelled and waved my arms, "It's my Birthday! I want giant pocky!" Scott turns to me and says, "With a V, I shall save you some giant pocky!" I went, "Yay!" So when we got to him, I introduced him to Roko. He says, "Ahh, so you're with With a V." She said, "Uhh... I guess so." And then she introduced Miles (A friend of hers) and he says, "And you're with with With a V." We all laughed. He handed me my giant pocky stick and Miles handed him his badge to sign. He asked, "Can I have one too?" "Sure!" and Scott grabs two instead of one. I say, "I'll take the other!" Scott looks at Miles and says, "Well, it IS her Birthday," and hands me the other. I gave him my fan to sign and he twirled it then saying, "With a V?" I said, "Yes?" "What's your first name?" I laughed. "J--." So he writes on the fan: J--, Happy Birthday! and puts musical notes all over it. I wanted to take a picture with him too so we did. After that, I went to watch the Costume Contest with Xandra (Kamui had already left with her family). It was really cool! Most of the people we really liked actually won. There was this one girl who had made some sort of outfit that had wings and the wings could move. There was an Efrit and the guy wearing it was on stilts. It was great to see him trying to get up and down the stairs. There was a group from Naruto that was really good. They won best small group. The WHOLE cast of FF6 won best large group. There was a really cool, accurate Queen Serenity (from Sailor Moon). She had a crystal staff that was absolutely amazing. There was a really cute Sora (from KHII) in his Space Paranoids (Tron's world) outfit. He won for Best prop. It was really cool. Fan favorite went to this girl that cosplayed Red XIII from FF7. She was in full body cosplay and played out Red really well. After the contest ended, there was nothing more to do. So we headed out to the car. Xandra's grandma had called earlier and told us we'd best not come over because she had gotten sick. So we decided to just go all the way home. We left at like 5:15 and got to my house at near 10. However, after fifteen minutes of driving, I had called my dad and told him of our change in plans and we were hungry. So we went to Waffle House. Xandra says to me, "You're probably going to need shoes." I said, "Well, my shoes are in my red duffle and that's buried." She says just wear mine. So I open the back, find her shoes and stuff them on. It looked very bad with my prehistoric outfit. When we were inside, I saw a sign that read: No service without shirt and shoes. I said to Xandra, "Do bed sheets count?" (This is because my Yuuen outfit was made entirely from a bed sheet.) She laughed. When we got back in the car, Xandra and I went to sleep. When we woke up again. It was dark and we were on the Alligator Alley. It was like... 9. I called my dad to tell him not to make dinner for me. We saw a brush fire. It was so cool. The flames... Anyways! We stopped by Publix cause Xandra's parents wanted to get a few things. Then we made our way to my house. We unloaded my stuff and brought it in. We all talked about this and that and then they decided to go back to their house so I could pack and change. And I did. And THAT'S my MetroCon Trip (my sweet sixteen birthday party).
