Remaining Injuries
Injuries related to the bomb fall under the three headings of burns, wounds from the blast and radiation poisoning. I got all three. My face, head, both arms and entire upper body were burnt. I still have keloids remaining and on rainy days and in the winter they throb in pain. As for wounds from the blast, the front of my head has a sunken-in dent, there is a scar on my neck from the beam that hit me, pain from my five ribs that were broken, and cuts on my legs. Effects of the radiation poisoning started to show up about 5 or 6 years after the bomb.
I continue to have fevers with no apparent cause and my blood pressure ranges from 50 to 80, about half the blood pressure of a normal person. Even now, 56 years after the fact, I get nausea and dizziness and have difficulty breathing every time the weather or the air pressure changes. Most of the other bomb survivors I knew have died of lung cancer, so I am always worried about the day when I myself will get lung cancer. I live each day in mental agony over whether or not my children and my grandchildren will also show signs of health problems. Nuclear weapons are the primary ingredient for the downfall of humankind and should be abolished completely.
