Objective: Students will develop an understanding of what nuclear energy is,how it is used, some of its benefits and some of its hazards.

TEKS addressed in this lesson

TEKS 6A: Describes the existence and properties of subatomic particles.
TEKS 613: Analyze stable and unstable isotopes of an element to determine the relationship between the isotope's stability and its application.
TEKS 9A: Compares fission and fusion reaction in terms of masses of the reactants and products and the amount of energy released in the nuclear reactions.
TEKS 9B: Investigates radioactive elements to determine half-life.

TEKS 9C: Evaluates the commercial use of nuclear energy and medical uses of radioisotopes.

Activity: The students will be divided into groups and then given one of topics from the following list and asked to prepare a lesson which will be taught to the whole class. Technology must be incorporated into the lesson. This activity will be evaluated by the rubric following this activity.

List of Topics:

1 . Operation of a Nuclear Power Plant
                          2. Use of radioactive Isotopes as Tracers
                          3. Use of radioactive Dating by paleontologists.
                          4. Radioactive as used in medical treatment and diagnostics
                          5. Dangers of Radon Exposure. Where are you at danger of coming in contact with radon? How can we detect and control radon exposure?
                          6. Comparison of Fusion a Fission Reactions

7. Compare alpha, beta, and gamma nuclear decay

Types of technology to be used to complete this activity: Computer, word-processing software, scanner, digital camera, overhead, VCR, TV, and the Internet.
