Matagorda Island

Have you ever wanted to escape to a tranquil secluded island and leave civilization, traffic, family, friends and co-workers behind and spend a weekend with whooping cranes and peregrine falcons, white tail deer, coyote, raccoon, jackrabbits and Bottlenose dolphins? There is plenty to enjoy on the island  hiking/bicycling, we would need bikes on the beach-access trails and mowed paths, birding, wildlife observation, picnicking, beachcombing, camping, swimming and surfing. It also seems like a good place to stargaze at night and enjoy a sunrise. Cars are not allowed on the island. Transportation to the island is provided by a state ferry (Adult Fee is $10) which operates once a day each way on Thursday and Friday;ferry leaves (port,9am),(island,4pm) and 3 times a day each way on Saturday and Sunday;ferry leaves (port,8am, 10am and 3pm)(island 9am, 2pm and 4pm) or a private boat, if you have one. The Gulf beach is a two-mile stretch of Beach Campground that is open for camping. It is 3.5 miles across the island from the boat dock and is serviced by the island shuttle which is available only on weekends. The island is a primitive place which lacks conveniences such as electricity, water, and telephones (We will have a cellular telephone). We will need plenty of drinking water, food, adequate sun protection, and insect repellent.  Enjoy
