The 'Katie In Asia' Update
Last Updated June 1, 2004
Hello!

I hope you are enjoying  the transitions in your lives, may they be as simple as relishing the change from spring to summer, or something more substantial.  In my case, this is the year of transitions, and sometimes it feels like things change so fast my conception of reality can hardly keep up.

When it comes to the change of seasons, Hong Kong is a bizarre place to be.  There are really only two seasons: desperately hot or surprisingly cold.  Ok, not cold like New England, but cold like are there ANY more blankets in the house?!? I wish this space heater was more effective.....  And with all the humidity, one can feel damp to the bone.  Summer goes the other way--Hong Kongers seek out underground, air conditioned passageways to connect them from point A to point B.  The idea of heading outside and braving the 90 degree, 100 percent humidity, pollution level high situation, just to go get a cup of ice coffee, is sometimes more than one can bare.  And with all the humidity, one can feel damp to the bone.  But, for a brief few weeks between the two extremes there is something like a spring (and a fall), when the plants bloom in uncanny unison, and the smell of thousands of unidentifiable tropical flowers permeates even the most filthy of Hong Kong street corners.  It is a beautiful time and like most things, is grossly under appreciated.

Life transitions can sometimes take on the same tenor as seasonal transitions, or at least mine have.....
