Hong Kong
I am sure that more than a few of your are wondering "What is this Hong Kong place about? Why is Katie there?  What is she doing?"  So I have decided to make this little info page for your perusal.

Click here to link to a lonely planet description of Hong Kong
Hong Kong is a group of islands an part of a peninsula attached to mainland China in the southern Canton region.  While it is small in terms of land mass, Hong Kong packs the people in.  Currently there are approximately 8 million people living in the Special Administrative region.  I was going to say country but techinally Hong Kong is part of China and thus not it's own country... it all depends on who you ask.  Click on the map to get the Longely Planet synopsis on Hong Kong.
FYI, I live in the area called the New Territories, on the eastern side right on Tolo Harbour.
As many of you are aware, I am in Hong Kong doing a Fellowship through Wellesley College where I graduated from.  Through this Fellowship I am currently a teacher's assistant in the Japanese Department, an administrator of non-academic English language programming and a student of Mandarin Chinese all at The Chinese University of Hong Kong

Street Corner in Kowloon
Hong Kong is a very exciting place to be in Asia.  It is often referred to as the place where 'East Meets West' though I would argue that every major city in Asia is an example of this.  But because Hong Kong was under British control until 1997 when it was 'returned' to China, a tug between 'Eastern' and 'Western' values, norms, architecture, food, language, etc., is all evident and makes Hong Kong a vibrant part of the world.
I have provided a few links to some of my favorite places in Hong Kong.  Of course, I am unable to provide links to my REALLY favorite places because they are mostly just sections of town, etc.
Though notoriously the foreigner hang-out, which is often a deterrent, there is a lot to be said for Lan Kwai Fong and the area surrounding it (SOHO, BOHO, Wyndham Road, Central, etc).  This is the place to come for drinking, dinner (all at obscenely high prices), shopping, art gallery's and just to have a nice walk around.  This is also where I was accosted by paparazzi!

For a more culturally mixed night out I prefer to head to Kowloon, the area between the New Territories (where I live) and Hong Kong Island.

For a more mellow time I like to head to some of the outlying islands or nearby
Sai Kung to enjoy fresh, delicious seafood and a laid back atmosphere.  This summer I plan to try wind surfing out there!
