| Through the millennia there were various types and styles of lightsaber. Many created by Jedi apprentices reflected the design of their Master's weapon, while others chose unique designs. The lightsaber referred to as the protosaber was the earliest type of lightsaber used by the Jedi Knights. Also known as an Archaic lightsaber, or simply a 'laser sword', these ancient weapons were a far cry from the elegant designs used millennia later. Using 'frozen blaster' technology, the protosaber required a seperate power pack, usually worn on the back. As technology advanced, these power packs became small enough to fit inside the lightsaber. Often, proto- sabers were made from duranium, giving them a hand- crafted look. A dual-phase lightsaber, such as the one used by Corran Horn, was constructed to operate at two different blade lengths. The user triggered a switch that would lengthen the blade, often giving them an edge in a duel. However, these sabers were rare, as few of the crystals used in regular lightsabers could handle the additional power required to extend the blade's length. Dual-phase saber blades usually changed colour when elongated. Training lightsabers came in various forms; Younglings used minature versions of lightsabers with decreased power so as not to cause injury - though they could deliver a bit of a sting. Jedi padawans often sparred with training sabers, though these were the same size as regular sabers. Many Jedi merely decreased their own lightsaber's power and used that. The double-bladed lightsaber was sometimes used in training, though no Jedi used them in real combat situations. |
