DOUBLE-BLADED LIGHTSABER |
Only a highly skilled swordsmaster, and one fuelled by the power of the Force, could wield a deadly double- bladed lightsaber. The Sith Lord Darth Maul was one such being. However, Maul wasn't the first to use the weapon. Millennia before the Battle of Naboo, Exar Kun fashioned his own double-bladed lightsaber. During the Great Sith War, he modified the weapon to increase its lethality, and customized the controls in order to extend each blade from half a meter to one-and-a-half meters in length. The schematics for the weapon entered the Sith archives, but were soon lost in the plethora of data on the dark arts of the Sith. They were eventually recovered by Darth Sidious, who showed his apprentice, Maul, how to build the weapon. Like all Sith lightsabers, the crystals powering the blade were synthetic, created in a blazing furnace and aided by the dark powers of the creator. His lightsaber's hilt was constructed to fit his hands, and balanced for his stroke. It became an extension of the Dark Lord. The handle itself was twice the size than that of a standard lightsaber, and contained two sets of internal components, one acting as a backup for the other. Maul could use his lightsaber with either one or two blades activated, and could even detatch the two halves of the handle to make two seperate lightsabers. Maul used his double-bladed lightsaber on various missions for his Master, though for most of the time preceeding the Battle of Naboo, Sidious forebade him from revealing his saber - and thus the fact that he was a Sith. Finally, Maul was able to battle two Jedi during the hunt for Hath Monchar on Coruscant, though both sacrificed themselves for their friends rather than die by Maul's blade. He was again given the chance to kill a Jedi - Qui-Gon Jinn, on Tatooine - but failed when he escaped. Maul was sent to Naboo, where he waited for the Jedi, telling himself he would not fail. He engaged Obi-Wan Kenobi and Qui-Gon Jinn in a duel which progressed through Theed's generator room, and finally killed Qui-Gon. His apprentice attacked Maul in a rage, and managed to slice his lightsaber in half. Maul continued to fight using one half, but that was lost when Kenobi sliced Maul in two. Double-bladed lightsabers were sometimes used in the hands of Jedi, though only for training purposes. They deemed them far too dangerous for actual combat: it would take a lifetime of training with the weapon in order to master it...as Darth Maul had proven. |
