| A variation of the LAAT infantry gunship, the Republic cargo gunship was responsible for air-lifting AT-TE's, speeder bikes and cargo into the thick of the Clone Wars. Though the green-hued LAAT/c was larger than the LAAT/i gunship, it featured fewer armaments due to its role as a transport rather than a transport and an assault ship. Instead of the LAAT/i's deck for troopers to stand on during flight, the LAAT/c had an open hold with two heavy-lift agrav drive arms that clamped onto the hull of an AT-TE, allowing it to be carried in the space behind the cockpit. Because of its low firepower, the LAAT/c wasn't used as an attack gunship: once it had dropped off its cargo on the battlefield, it returned to the assault ship for its next payload. Numerous LAAT/c gunships were deployed during the Battle of Geonosis to transport AT-TE walkers onto the battlefield. Though the AT-TE's were easy targets while being dropped into the warzone - as many were hit by Hailfire droid missiles - the LAAT/c's helped ensure victory for the Republic. They were later used to deploy various other war machines onto the battlefield, including the TX-130 fighter tank and smaller variants of the Republic walker. |
