The Hutt caravel was first seen in the Dark Empire graphic novel
Hutts were typically selfish beings, and usually gave more thought to their
prized possessions and wealth than their sentient staff, slaves and
minions. The Hutt caravel was another example of Hutt decadance,
and their disregard for their underlings.

Hutt caravels - manufactured by the Hutt favourite,
Ubrikkian Industries, who also produced their luxury sail
barges - were commonly found on Nal Hutta, or its moon,
Nar Shaddaa. The craft were luxurious, but only meant for
short flights, usually between the Hutt homeworld and its moon. The
Seltiss-2 caravel was basically a space-faring sail barge,
and contained a sublight drive for solar journeys, and a repulsorlift
drive for planetary travels. Few featured hyperdrives, as the short flights did not need them. Like the Ubrikkian sail barge, Hutt caravels were often modified with extra defences, though additional weapons were usually hidden under armour panels to surprise would-be attackers.

The controls for the weapons were situated in the main cabin, located in the armoured forward section of the hull, along with a large dias for the Hutt itself. This specially-made dais was designed to loom over guests in the cabin. The cabin was decorated in greel wood and chrall-crystal, and displayed a remarkable view of space when the front panels were retracted. The cabin could also detatch from the caravel as an independant transport. When the caravel docked, the cabin detatched and headed down to the surface on its own.

The cabin acted as an emergancy escape pod for the Hutt, but there were no additional escape pods for the servants or cooks stationed in the level above the cabin. However, this usually didn't worry the Hutt, as replacement staff were easy to find...or enslave.
