As part of their standard field gear, the A99 aquata
breather allowed a Jedi to survive underwater for up to
two hours - this little device proved useful to the Jedi
ambassadors forced to flee down to the swampy
Naboo during the planet's blockade crisis.

A small breather that fit snugly into a Jedi Knight's
utility belt, the A99 aquata breather was a compact
mouthpiece designed to supply its wearer with a
breathable gas. The A99 had advanced filters to allow
it to function underwater and in certain poisonous
environments. Though the A99 proved useful during
many watery missions, the Jedi tended to avoid such
technological devices in order to minimize their
dependance on anything but their own resourceful-
ness. However, the A99 was only used for short
periods in a specific environment, and could not protect the wearer if they were exposed to total vacuum.

The A99 also had a number of variants to accommodate a variety of alien physiologies. Jedi Master Plo Koon wore a more ornate, specialized version of a breather, which supplied him with gases vital to his Kel Dor physiology. Qui-Gon Jinn and his padawan, Obi-Wan Kenobi, utilized A99 breathers when their negotiations concerning the Naboo blockade failed, and they ended up following Jar Jar Binks down to the Gungan's underwater city.

Early concepts for the aqua breather found the Jedi attatching jellyfish to their faces in order to breathe underwater. This idea was later used for Yuuzhan Vong gnulliths in the New Jedi Order series
