They appeared without warning from beyond the edge
of galactic space; a warrior race called the Yuuzhan
Vong, armed with surprise, treachery, and a bizarre
organic technology that proved a match -too often more
than a match - for the New Republic and its allies.

The Yuuzhan Vong came, saw and conquered the
galaxy. They invaded after their own homeworlds were
ravaged by war, forcing them to search for a new home.
Transporting their civilization in massive Worldships,
the Yuuzhan Vong travelled through the void for almost
a thousand years. The Worldships became the only
homes many of the species had ever known. Just as
their dream of reaching the Chosen Land seemed even beyond the power of their gods to provide, word reached the Supreme Overlord that a likely galaxy had been found. Scouts were sent to ensure the worth of what they hoped would become their new home, and the Yuuzhan Vong prepared to invade the galaxy of the infidels.

The New Republic was not prepared for such an attack, and reacted badly to the invasion. They knew nothing of the Yuuzhan Vong, and had to build up information on their enemy in battle. They quickly learned the Yuuzhan Vong abhorred all kinds of technology: while the species used weapons and ships in battle, they did not use machines or droids. Instead, the Yuuzhan Vong warfleet was made up of organic starfighters; Yuuzhan Vong warriors wielded living weapons in battle; and they used bioengineered creatures in their everyday lives. In many ways, their organic technology was more advanced than anything the New Republic had to offer. Their ships could heal in battle, and seal wounds that would otherwise doom its crew in the depths of space. Their living amphistaffs could spit poison, and become a snake-like whip, or a razor-sharp spear. They used living villips to communicate over distance, and all manner of bioengineering to alter their appearance, enhance their warriors and gain the upper hand against the New Republic.

The Yuuzhan Vong were even a match for the Jedi. In their first encounter with a Yuuzhan Vong warrior, the Jedi discovered they could not feel the Yuuzhan Vong through the Force. It was as if they blocked out the Force, creating a hole in its energy. This caused the Jedi to wonder if the Yuuzhan Vong were really alive at all; though they worked with nature, they were not present in the Force, which encompassed all life. However, Jacen Solo later learned the Yuuzhan Vong could be sensed in the Force, and it was the narrow perceptions of the Jedi, regarding the Force in two sides - light and dark - that could not see the Yuuzhan Vong.
