When the Empire took control of the galaxy, podracing was outlawed because of the danger and the high-speed crashes. However, it was for these reasons that the Boonta Eve Classic was so popular during the heyday of podracing.
The Mos Espa track where the Boonta race was held annually was touted as the most dangerous race course in the galaxy, and for good reason. The track took full advantage of the many dangers to be found on Tatooine: from hairpin turns and deadly outcroppings in Beggar's Canyon to the infamous Mushroom Mesa, and even Tusken Raider attacks, which made for a thrilling race. Tens of thousands of spectators gathered each year in Mos Espa's Grand Arena to watch the race or bet on their favourites, while thousands more watched broadcasts sent across the Outer Rim.
Though it was already popular before-hand, the race in which Anakin Skywalker won his freedom ensured the Boonta Eve Classic would go down in podrace history. Anakin, a local boy from Mos Espa, was just one of a -strong lineup which included the infamous Sebulba. Many of the other competitors crashed, or were destroyed thanks to underhand tactics from the other racers - especially Sebulba. However, in an intense race to the finish between Skywalker and Sebulba, the Dug finally got a taste of his own medicine when Anakin forced him off the track. Thanks to some clever wagers placed by Jedi Master Qui-Gon Jinn prior to the race, Anakin not only won the Boonta Eve Classic, but his freedom from his slave owner, Watto. |
