To help differentiate the 'good guys' and the 'bad guys' in the confusing battlefield of the Clone Wars, the Republic Gunship rockets leave a clean, whispy white vapor trail while the hailfire droids paint the skies with thick, noxious black exhaust

A self-aware mobile missile platform, the hailfire droid
was a valuable addition to the InterGalactic Banking
Clan's arsenal, and were capable of decimating whole
platoons of enemy troops.

The hailfire droids - also known by their nickname of
'wheel droids' - were equipped with missile launchers
fitted either side of its head, which could fire thirty rocket
warheads. Their use was short-lived during a battle, as
their missiles could not be replaced or recharged as a
laser cannon could. However, their warheads were
sufficient to deal extensive damage, so the effect was
greater than the cost. The hailfire droids ran on large
hoop-like wheels on either side of the body, which
enabled them to cross difficult terrain just as well as an all-terrain walker.

Like other droid tanks used by the Confederacy of Independant Systems, the hailfire droid was originally used privately by the Banking Clan to root out tardy customers who refused to pay back loans. The Banking Clan's Collection and Security Divisions boasted thousands of hailfire droids, most of which were transferred to the Seperatist forces. There were also a couple of variants to deal with differing market needs.
