WAMPA ICE CREATURE |
[What's the matter? You smell something?] |
Pronounced: Womp-ah Links: Star Wars Spoofs: Wampa |
The tauntauns of Hoth had long ago developed an evasive, nomadic existance on the snowy plains. The reason: wampa ice creatures. Alpha predators native to Hoth, the wampas were violent, fur-covered carnivores able to camoflage them- selves in the planet's snowy environment. A wampa's natural enemy was another wampa, though its chief prey was the tauntaun. The creatures lived in ice caves, where they brought back prey to eat at their leisure. Wampas preferred live food, so they often incapacitated their prey and dragged it back to their lair. Though wampas led solitary lives, they were known to co- ordinate their attacks at times, as Luke Skywalker and Callista found when they landed on Hoth for emergancy repairs. Wampas defended their territory fiercely, as they needed a largehunting ground in order to sustain them- selves. The creatures hunted using their sharp claws and fangs: a blow from a wampa's forearm was sure to knock out most prey in a single swipe. Perfectly camo- flaged against the snow, wampas hunted its quarry on two or four legs, before rising onto its hind legs to attack. |
