RONTO |
Though rontos were hardy pack animals, they were easily startled. This, coupled with their poor eyesight, meant that sudden movements often left a ronto rider unceremoniously dumped flat on his back. Rontos were not originally from Tatooine, though most of the rontos in the galaxy could be found on the desert world. There, and in various other habitats, they were often domesticated and used as beasts of burden. Being as the creatures were extremely loyal and easy to domesticate, many beings used rontos as living transports. They were also known to develop a deep bond with their masters, and their keen sense of smell served as an early warning to riders of imminent dangers. Fortunately, the ronto's size usually meant predators steered clear of the beasts. Were a predator to attack a ronto, however, it would not have a hard time in overcoming the creature. Apart from the fact that rontos were herbivores, they had poor eyesight. Also, they required a great deal of water, an expensive commodity on arid Tatooine, so the less wealthy residents of the planet had to make do with other beasts to carry their belongings. Still, rontos were mostly well-suited for the desert. Their skin was able to easily shed excess heat, while the flap-like folds framing their broad faces could wrap around to cover their small eyes during sandstorms. |
