Vergere was an enigma; her teachings were a puzzle that, when solved, painted a unique look at the Force. She was unfathomable, neither allied with Jacen Solo, nor fighting alongside the Yuuzhan Vong. Even her background was a mystery. Very little information of Vergere's past was uncovered by Luke Skywalker's Jedi Knights. She had been part of the old Jedi Order, and had lived in the Jedi Temple on Coruscant. She became a Jedi Knight at some point in her life, and was dispatched on a mission to the mysterious world of Zonama Sekot. There, she became caught up in an extra-galactic attack against Zonama Sekot, by beings dubbed as 'Far Outsiders'. Vergere knew her duty as a Jedi; she gave herself up to the aliens so that they could study her and leave Sekot alone. However, she never revealed she was a Jedi, and removed all traces of her past life. Vergere lived among the Far Outsiders - or the Yuuzhan Vong, as they were really known - for fifty years, in which time she learned much about them. Her perceptions of the Force were changed by the Vong, who appeared to exist outside of the supposedly all-encompassing energy field. Vergere became a familiar to the priest, Elan, and hoped for the day that she could return home. Vergere met Han Solo on a mission with Elan during the Yuuzhan Vong invasion, and gave him a sample of her tears - tears which could be altered through the Force to heal. Han gave them to Mara Jade, who used them to overcome an alien disease conquering her body. The members of the New Republic were not sure which side Vergere was really on. She aided the Jedi on a mission above Myrkr, but ended up handing Jacen Solo over to the Yuuzhan Vong. She tortured him continually in an attempt to show him the True Way of the Yuuzhan Vong, and embrace pain. She also began to teach him a warped version of his Jedi training with Master Skywalker, which had a profound effect on Jacen. Vergere still did not help Jacen directly, but showed him the paths to take. Eventually, Jacen returned with Vergere to the New Republic - now the Galactic Alliance - where Luke Skywalker and Vergere debated the very nature of the Force. After Vergere sabotaged a weapon of mass destruction which went against all Jedi teachings, she became a fugitive from the Galactic Alliance, and stowed away onboard Jacen's ship during the Battle of Ebaq. Vergere made her second great sacrifice when she killed herself to save Jacen on the surface of Ebaq 9. She ploughed an A-wing into a base on the moon, venting the mining shafts and suffocating the Vong inside. She later appeared to Jacen as a spirit, who pledged to honor her memory by following the Force to his own destiny. |
Vergere's 'dark side theory' in Destiny's Way - where she told Jacen Solo the dark side did not exist in the Force but in the individual - sparked much controversy with Star Wars fans |
