A Marvel Star Wars comic featured a tale where young Obi-Wan foiled a pirate attack on a luxury liner. The story was noteworthy because at the time, George Lucas was planning the prequels and did not want any other stories about a younger Obi-Wan |

Obi-Wan's time as a learner was not yet over. He had not yet faced the Trials, though he was about to face his most dangerous adventure yet. He and Qui-Gon had been sent by Mace Windu to settle a conflict above Naboo. The Trade Federation - which the two Jedi had run into earlier during a plot to assassinate the Supreme Chancellor - had blockaded Naboo, in protest against the new taxations on trade routes to the Outer Rim. The Jedi ambassadors were greeted, and told to wait for the Viceroy. But Obi-Wan had a bad feeling about something, though he could not pin- point what it was. Obi-Wan's unease was not unfounded: the Trade Federation destroyed their ship and tried to kill the ambassadors. Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon escaped the battleship, and landed on Naboo smuggled aboard troop transports. Obi-Wan arrived in a swamp, which shorted his lightsaber. After Qui-Gon had to dispatch two STAPs chasing his padawan, Obi-Wan was admonished for his mistake. He was later lectured by Qui-Gon again after voicing his opinions on the 'pathetic lifeform' his Master had picked up in the swamp. However, Jar Jar Binks proved useful, and helped them reach Theed, to warn the Queen of the invasion. After a fight, the Jedi rescued the Queen and fled Naboo in her starship. Unfortunately, their hyperdrive was damaged while the pilot ran the blockade, forcing them to land on Tatooine for repairs. Obi-Wan wasn't too happy about being stuck on such an arid planet, and grumbled even more when Qui-Gon informed him he was bringing along a slave he had freed while obtaining a new hyperdrive. The Queen headed for Coruscant, where Qui-Gon requested the boy be tested by the Jedi Council. When they refused to train him, Qui-Gon said he would take Anakin Skywalker as his padawan. This hurt Obi-Wan, causing a break in their strong bond that had foemed over the years. However, when the Jedi returned to Naboo - to protect the Queen, who had concocted a plan to take back her planet - they forgave each other and preapred for battle. The strengthened friendship would not last much longer: the Sith Lord Darth Maul attacked the Jedi, and split them up. Qui-Gon battled Maul alone, but his experience was no match for Maul's youth. The Dark Lord killed Obi-Wan's mentor and friend as the horrified padawan watched helplessly. When the barrier seperating Obi-Wan from his Master's killer disappeared, the young Jedi attacked Maul in a fit of rage...and was almost killed. Only by concentrating and calling upon the Force did he find the strength to kill the Dark Lord. Though he had survived, it was too late for Qui-Gon. As Obi-Wan held his dying Master in his arms, he promised him to train Anakin. The duel with Maul showed the Jedi Counil Obi-Wan's skill, causing them to grant him the title of Jedi Knight. They were more reluctant to honour Qui-Gon's last wish, but eventually they decided Obi-Wan could train Anakin. As they stood side-by-side at Qui-Gon's cremation, Obi-Wan told Anakin that he would be a Jedi. "I promise you." |
