One of the most famous starfighters in the galaxy, the T-65 snubfighter - nicknamed the 'X-wing' by Alliance pilots - played a major part in some of the greatest battles in history.
The X-wing was so-called because of its split-X wing configuration. When entering battle mode, the S-foils would open, enabling greater accuracy in a fight. The ship's four laser cannons were mounted on each wingtip, with the proton torpedos housed in the ship's nose. The small craft was only large enough for one pilot, though an astrodroid could tag along at the back of the ship to navigate and preform repairs. The look of the X-wing was based on earlier craft piloted during the days of the Republic, such as the Z-95 Headhunter. Subsequent models of the X-wing fighter have upgraded the ship with sensors and advanced computers, though the design has remained the same; as the X-wings were more than capable of flying rings around the highly-maneuverable TIE fighters, there was little point in a redesign.
The Alliance first obtained the X-wing after the original Imperial design team defected to the Rebellion. The X-wings had their first major victory at the Battle of Yavin, where Luke Skywalker - flying a T-65 - destroyed the Death Star. X-wing squadrons were present during the Battle of Endor, and Rogue Squadron, led by Wedge Antilles, later captured Coruscant from the Empire.
