A fierce yet at the same time gentle and brave race, the arboreal Wookiees of Kashyyyk are an imposing sight, but get to know them and they can be as friendly and loyal as a household pet...though they will invariably leave a lot more fur on the carpet!
Evolving on the forest-covered world of Kashyyyk has made Wookiees powerful climbers, as they were forced to build homes high up in the trees to avoid ground-based predators. The Wookiees created a strong community in their tree cities, holding many ancient traditions and ways of life. Though Wookiees do venture out and kill animals for food, they are deeply respectful of nature, and have a strong connection to the sanctity of their world's ecosystem. Though they lead a somewhat primitive life, they are at home with advanced technology; as well as creating powerful bowcasters, many Wookiees explored the stars in spaceships, travelling on adventures across the galaxy. These adventures could prove very long indeed; a Wookiee's average lifespan was around three centuries, and as Wookiees have certain regenerative properties, they were not easily defeated.
Many Wookiees who left Kashyyyk, such as the warrior Chewbacca, swore life-debts to other beings, and while some recipients weren't grateful at first, a Wookiee bodyguard had obvious merits. Wookiee life-debts stretched back centuries, and were revered very highly with the Wookiee population. During the time of the Empire, Kashyyyk was invaded by Imperial slavers - after dealing with the Wookiee-hating Trandoshans - and many were forced to live a life of servitude to the Empire. Luckily, the Rebellion defeated the Empire and was able to free the Wookiees so that they may once again live in peace among the trees. |
