Grading Criteria for the cap 251 Project

Project Policies

?     Your project must be an interactive web site using JavaScript, DHTML and other internet technology you have learned in this course.

?     A certain amount of consultation in working on a problem is O.K. but the programs, scripts and images you submit must be of your own.

?     You are required to give an oral explanation of your code to confirm it is indeed your work. Taking credit for work that is not yours is not that hard to detect, and will result in a grade of "F".

?     Extra credits will be assigned to any creative idea.

Several criteria will be looked at when grading your project, which are:

Project Theme and Objectives (10%)

State a clear theme and define the site’s goal, audience and purpose (who will be using the site and what should your site do).  Distribute a survey if necessary to get an audience’s input (Audience Test Group).

Search for sites that are similar in their themes to the site you plan to build.  Show its pros and cons and compare it with your site.

Team Work (20%)

Working in-group and communication between team members is very important.  Any arguments or complaining will result in a zero grade for this part.  We have given you the opportunity to choose each other in your group, so no excuses will be accepted.

Design and Layout (20%)

You should design your website on paper before you start implementing it.  You must create a site blueprint that shows the site’s content organized into groups. Decide how many pages you will have, what each page will contain, what the layout of each page will be, how the user will navigate, and how you will implement these.  You will be graded on the design of your sites

?     Consistency.

?     Completeness.

?     Clean layout.

?     Clear navigation.

?     Easy to use (user-friendly).

?   Simplicity (not lengthy and loads quickly).

Graphics and credit pages  (10%)

Since this is not a graphic design course, I fully understand that you may use images, backgrounds and other materials from other web sites.   However, you must cite all uses of external materials (images, scripts, etc.) and it should not exceed 25% of the total graphs and scripts in your site.  For things that you did produce, this should be at least 75% of your work,, you should give a brief explanation stating why you chose such tools.

Navigation (20%)

You must have a consistent and clear navigation scheme for your website.  This applies to your main pages, but does not have to apply to the secondary pages.  There are many ways that you may choose to do this: frames, click able images, image maps, or simple anchors using tables for layout.  Whatever you choose, it should be easy to use and visually appealing.

Report (20%)

A brief report (2-3 pages) of the project should be produced, describing the various components of the system. A discussion of how you have met your objectives set out in your proposal should be discussed.

Your report should include the following

§         Cover page that contains your site’s theme, URL, group members, course id and instructor’s name.

§         A short summary of your project theme.

§         Include links to the sources of the material that you did not produce yourself.

§          In addition, list the software and tools that you used such as Microsoft frontpage, Macromedia flash, Adobe Photoshop, JavaScript………etc.

§         Also, list the work of each team member in your report.

§         Write all references and resources you have used to get your data and information used in your site.

§         Any survey you have used for your site.

§         A comparison of similar sites.

§         Blueprint of your site.

§         You should hand in with your report a CD containing all of your files and images used to create your site

Hosting (20%)

You must post your final project to the web.  Make sure that all links work, all images and web pages load properly and quickly.  Dead links and unloadable or slow loading images and web pages will result in a lower grade.
