Half day city tour, after an early breakfast, to include the Sabah Museum and a visit to the Sabah Foundation Building, Land & Survey Department and the Kota Kinabalu Municipal Council. Lunch.

Ater lunch, begin urban land use survey of Kota Kinabalu from Wisma Merdeka to Centre Point. Dinner and overnight at STAR.

9th April 2000

After breakfast, transfer to Gaya Street Tamu (Sunday Market) follow by lunch in one of the local shops in Kota Kinabalu. Back to STAR in the afternoon or shopping at Centre Point. Dinner and overnight at STAR.

10th April 2000

Acclimatisation and complete land use survey of Kota Kinabalu in the morning with follow up work. Dinner and overnight at STAR.

11th April 2000

After breakfast, proceed journey to Kinabalu Park ["KP"] (about 2 hours drive). Check in to and lunch in Kinabalu Pine Resort ("KPR"). Briefing by the Park Management Authority followed by rainforest trekking. Dinner and overnight KPR.

12th April 2000

After breakfast, depart KPR for KP to begin the trek towards the summit of Gunung Aki Nabalu. At noon approx. Arrive at Laban Rata (resthouse) at 11,000ft (3,353 m) above sea level. Lunch, dinner and overnight at Laban Rata.

13th April 2000

At 3.00 a.m., start to the summit of Mt. Kinabalu (13,455 ft or 4,101 m). in time for the dramatic sunrise on the highest mountain of Malaysia and to view, in panorama, the whole of Sabah. After 15 minutes on the peak in relatively low temperature, descend to the Park HQ, to arrive approximately 11.30 am for lunch then proceed to Poring Hot Springs, Ranau-geothermal springs and return to KPR. On return route, visit the Kundasang War Memorial Gardens and lay wreath of remembrance. Dinner and overnight in KPR.

14th April 2000

Depart at 0800 hrs for Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary to experience feeding time at 3.00 p.m. Lunch at Mile 32, Sandakan. Proceed to Sandakan Renaissance Hotel for swim, dinner and overnight.

15th April 2000

After breakfast, check out at 8.00 a.m. For departure to Lahad Datu with a visit to the town. Lunch at 8888 Good Fortune Restaurant and at 2.00 p.m. proceed to the heart of the Borneo rainforest and check in at Borneo Rainforest Lodge in the Danum Valley. Introduction to the rainforest at the Nature Trail. Following dinner, a series of lectures provided by University lecturers from the Danum Valley Field Study and Research Centre. Overnight at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge.

16th April 2000

Bird watching in the rainforest at 6.00 a.m. followed by breakfast at 7.00 a.m. At 8.00 a.m. Group A will do guided rainforest walk to include Coffin Cliff and Jacuzzi Pool. Group B proceed to guided walk in rainforest along riverside trails. Both groups will be back for lunch at 12.00 noon.

At 2.00 p.m. Group A proceeds for guided jungle walk along Riverside trails and Group B for guided rainforest walk to include Coffin Cliff and Jacuzzi Pool. Both groups will assemble in the conference hall for the debriefing session at 6.00 p.m. Then dinner at 7.00 p.m. followed by night drive spotting for wildlife. Group A & B will do at different time. Overnight at BRL.

17th April 2000

Walk through the rainforest to the canopy walkway at 27 metres above forest floor level- in the early morning mist at 6.00 a.m. Bird watching at the canopy level of the rainforest. Breakfast is served at 7.30 a.m. At 9.30 a.m. Group A will be drifting down the Danum River (using tubes)and Group B will do Fluvial studies in River Danum. Lunch served at 12.00 noon.

At 1.30 p.m. Group A switched with Group B activity doing Fluvial studies in River Danum and Group B will now be drifting down the Danum River (using tubes). The groups assemble in the conference hall at 4.30 p.m. for debriefing and follow up of day's fieldwork. Dinner is served at 7.00 p.m. followed by further night drive & spotting of wildlife if possible.

18th April 2000

After breakfast, visit the fast growing forest plantation site and the Chip Mill project in Brumas. We would stop briefly in Tawau town for lunch. Followed by BBQ dinner and one night stay in Sabah Softwood.

19th April 2000

After breakfast, continue a one hour journey to Tawau for a brief visit to the town. Early lunch before boarding MAS flight MH2132 (departing at 12.35 p.m.) to Kota Kinabalu. Afternoon at leisure at STAR. Dinner and overnight at STAR.

20th April 2000

Breakfast followed by half day shopping visit to Centre Point and Wisma Merdeka and Filipino Market in Kota Kinabalu. Return to STAR for lunch. Late afternoon, visit to Monsopiad Cultural Village. Meeting with tribes people. Followed by dinner and cultural entertainment at Sri Rafflessia. Return to STAR for overnight stay.

21st April 2000

Breakfast followed by visit to Sapi Island to swim, snorkel, kayak, windsurf, or explore island. BBQ lunch on the island. Return at 4.00 p.m. to STAR. Dinner and overnight at STAR.

22nd April 2000

Breakfast and then community work amongst the Kadazandusun people in Kampong Duvanson. Followed by lunch with the community. Later in the evening, a farewell dinner at the Malam Kampong in STAR. Overnight in STAR.

23rd April 2000

Depart STAR at 3.00 p.m. for KKIA. Board flight MH2637 to Kuala Lumpur arriving at 6.45 a.m. then depart Kuala Lumpur on MH004 at 11.00 a.m. to arrive at LHR at 4.55 p.m. on the same date for Easter Sunday celebration. Depart Heathrow by coach at 6.00 p.m. approx. Arrive at Wellington School Quad at approx. 9.30 p.m.
