Color Symbolism

Red has always been considered to be the most beautiful color. It is a color of the proud and heroic. It was a color that symbolized the protection against evil. The first Easter Eggs were probably red because it was easy to find natural red dyes, and because of its use as a spring ceremonial color. In Bohemia, Easter is known as "The Red Holiday".

Blue - wasn't a very popular color, since it wasn't easy to come by. It reminded people of bruises, corpses, and the plague. In folk song, blue tells of death, spinsterhood and suffering. With the coming of Christianity, blue became known as a heavenly color.

Yellow was the color of ripening grain and was considered a symbol of good fortune.

Green is the color of the trees, of growth, and of youth. The apple tree was a safeguard against sickness and other bad things. It was also associated with the woman's role in the family, with healing and hunger. An apple twig was often put into the foundation of a new house while saying, "Be healthy and full of births, house, like this tree limb." The water from the first bath of a baby girl was poured under an apple or pear tree so that the daughter would be sweet. It was also said to be the color used as a symbol of weddings.

White - was originally a mourning color, but with Christianity, became a symbol of moral purity.

Black - was used in some places as a ceremonial color and most everywhere as a funeral color, again possibly symbolical for the burying of the old to produce the new.
