I was just diagnosed, where do I start?

Know you are not alone. There are 45 million Americans living with herpes. Eighty percent of the adult population has oral herpes and 1:4 to 1:5 adults have genital herpes. It gets much better over time. Your initial outbreak may last for 3 full weeks or a tad longer. When you get herpes, you go through the same grieving stages as when you lose anything else important to you, this time, the loss of of good sexual health and now you have to face life with a chronic STD. The stages you will go through are Denial, Sadness, Anger, Bargaining, and finally Acceptance. The good news, is you can get through it and you can accept yourself and feel good about yourself again and have a good life again. It just takes some work on your part. If you need help from someone for depression, this is quite normal, ,too, so don't be afraid to ask. Ask lots of questions, read a lot, inform yourself. The more you know ,the sooner you can accept yourself and start feeling good about life again. |

HSV-1 & HSV-2 The
Herpes Simplex Viruses:

Herpes is usually transmitted by people who do not know they have it, or by people who don't realize that their herpes is in its active phase. This could be an unnoticed outbreak or prodrome or asymptomatic shedding. |

Making Sense out of Type of Herpes (HSV 1 or HSV 2) and location (oral or genital) |
|
|
~~~~~Herpes Simplex Site & Type ~~~~~ |
|
Site and Type: There are two types of herpes simplex virus, HSV-1 and HSV-2. Type of virus does not indicate location of infection. These are similar in many ways (and very similar in structure), both can cause oral herpes and/or genital herpes. They prefer to live in different areas, and they follow different patterns of reactivation and transmission. This is why it's useful to find out which type you have, by asking your doctor to "type" your herpes from the lab test that is done to diagnose your herpes. This can be done by culture or blood test. Please read more about which blood tests are best. It also does matter in decision making in future relationships. Genital HSV-2: HSV-2 causes about 2/3 of new genital infections, but causes 90-95% of recurring infections. About 90% of those who have HSV-2 infection do not know that they are infected (Fleming, 1 Flemming DT, McQuillan GM, Johnson RE, et al. Herpes simplex virus type 2 in the United States, 1976 to 1994. N Engl J Med. 1997;337:1105-1111). (NHANESIII,ASHASTD.ORG, 1997). It is not common to spread HSV 2 to a partner's mouth via oral sex. Genital HSV-1: This infection is often transmitted from the mouth of one person to the genital of another, through giving and receiving oral sex, HSV-1 causes about 1/3 of new genital infections (about 75% of new genital infections in college students), but only recurs about once every other year, after the first year of being infected. It is easier to spread genital HSV 1 to a partner's mouth than genital HSV 2 via oral sex. Oral HSV-1: HSV-1 causes the majority of oral herpes ("cold sores" or "fever blisters"). About 60% of the US population over the age of 12 is infected with HSV-1 virus. This number increases to about 80% of adults 30 years and older. Only about 1/3 of people who are infected recall ever having any symptoms. Oral HSV 1 can be transferred to a partners genitals via oral sex. Oral HSV-2: This is rare (5% of oral herpes infections or less), but it can happen. After the first episode, in most cases, oral HSV-2 is not likely to reactivate and cause signs or symptoms. It is harder to spread oral HSV 2 to a partners genitals,via oral sex, than oral HSV 1, because it rarely re-activates.
Herpes Simplex infections in other
locations: Eyes (occular
herpes), finger (herpetic whitlow), brain (herpes encephalitis),
spinal cord (meningitis), and infection of newborn babies (Neonatal
Herpes). In most instances either HSV 1 or HSV 2 can cause these
infections. They are addressed in greater detail in specific
sections of this web site. |
