Banjo is originally from Spiral Mountain, an area in the game Banjo-Kazooie. I'm guessing it's in Texas, since he's a banjo player, and has the accent from the south. Banjo's smaller than the average bear, such as the grizzley. He is also the biggest racer in the game behind Krunch.
Banjo came to DKR as Rareware was finishing up Banjo-Kazooie for the N64. In Banjo-Kazooie, Banjo and Kazooie together defeated Gruntilda to save Banjo's sister Tooty. It turned out to be one of the best games of 1998, but it was beaten by Zelda: Ocarina Of Time. Darn.
With that speed, Banjo can be one of the best characters in the game. And he is one of the best for the hovercraft. When it's time to race at an easy course, speed is what you need, so pick him.
Banjo has also been in Banjo-Tooie, which is actually part 2 of Banjo-Kazooie. Again, Banjo & Kazooie defeat Grunty to make sure she is gone for good. Zelda: Majora's Mask defeated Banjo-Tooie for the game of 2000. Darn again.
For a while, there were rumors that he would have been in Super Smash Bros Melee, but after a while, the roster was confirmed, and his name was not on the list. I'm assuming that SSB Melee offered Banjo a contract to wrestle there but Banjo must have declined the offer.
Banjo has a strong future. Even though he's been absent from video games for 3 years, today he awaits Grunty's Revenge, the next Banjo game for Gameboy Advance, coming this November. And beyond that is Banjo-Threeie, whether it is on Gamecube or XBOX. Who knows? Banjo may have to fight Grunty 2 more times...
