1925 ***** 96 mins.
1942 ****1/2 69 mins.
This is, without a doubt, the funniest motion picture ever made. This film is immortal for the classic sequences of the dance of the dinner rolls and the meal of the boiled boot. The original 1925 silent version of the film is, of course, better than the 1942 re-release. In the 1942 release, the title cards are removed, Chaplin narrates the film, there is a musical score added by Chaplin, and the ending is shortened. The narration is a bit cheesy at times, and the ending is terrible without the final shot that's in the silent version, but the 1942 release still retains the hilarity that is Charlie Chaplin.
