If something isn't broken, don't try to fix it. This is, basically, a carbon copy of the original 1960 film with a new cast and more vulgarities. The only reason I give this film two and a half stars is this: I understand Gus Van Sant's purpose behind it. In this modern age, many people do not like watching black and white films. He wanted to make a modern day film that was as close to the original as possible to cater to modern audiences. Well, in all honesty, modern audiences need to get over themselves, but they never will. Word of advice: stick with the original. In the words of Mick Martin and Marsha Porter, hopefully this is "a bit of celluloid trickery that will blissfully fade from memory" (Video and DVD Guide 2004).
