chungking express

1994 ***** 102 mins.

This film possessed me completely the first time I watched it. The thought that kept running through my mind was this: this film is almost like a wonderful, masterful blend of True Romance and Amelie. The film consists of two stories. The first one is about a cop who lost his girlfriend and vows to fall in love with the next girl he sees. That girl just happens to be a mysterious blonde woman with sunglasses and a raincoat. The second story is about a girl's innocent obsession with a different cop. The music perfectly captures the feelings of the film. I will never be able to listen to The Mamas and the Papas' "California Dreamin'" without picturing Faye Wang dancing. This is an absolutely marvellous work of art written and directed by Wong Kar-Wai. Originally filmed in Chinese, the video, distributed by Quentin Tarantino's Rolling Thunder Pictures, contains yellow English subtitles.
Rated PG-13 for violence and sexual content.
