The Outer Reaches

Requirements -
The final paper for the class should be a critical essay that focuses on two or more of our class readings.  You have a variety of options here, but you need to be sure that you have incorporated at least two texts that we have used in the class.  The paper should be a minimum of five pages, and must be presented in MLA format with an appropriate reference page.  This is not simply a summary of the works; it is a critical analysis of an issue rather than a text, so the majority of you paper should be you own thoughts and ideas.

Finer Details -
Our readings have dealt with multicultural literature and the different dynamics of culture.  Think back over the topics and questions that we have addressed over the course this semester, and choose one aspect of the literature to write on.  There have been a myriad of issues that have come up, ranging from social injustice to the search for personal identity.  You need to select one issue and incorporate your ideas on the topic.  While your ideas should be the majority of the paper, you must be sure to use at least two texts to support your position and reinforce the topic.  For instance, between Maus and Palestine, we have read very conflicting and contradictory opinions about two cultural groups: the Jewish people and the Palestinians.  How then do we form opinions and make decisions about these from an informed perspective?  This would be a very appropriate topic for a critical essay.  Another idea would be to use the Keating article Deconstructing Whiteness and apply that to the race issues (or lack thereof) in The Watchmen.  Remember, you may use any of the texts that we have read and discussed in class, but you must select at least two.  Your paper should reflect an investigation, at least within your own thoughts, of the issue as well as criticism and/or evaluation of the texts and issue in question.  Again, I stress, do not write a summary or expansion of a few texts (this is not a compare/contrast paper), but focus on an issue and your perceptions and thoughts on that topic.  The texts you incorporate should be an explanatory aid in the communication of the idea, not the focus.
