The Midterm and Final Exams will be partially derived from the more controversial aspects of our class discussions. They will be essay exams (around 2-3 per exam, with some options here) drawing on both class discussion and a presentation of your opinions. You will not be asked simple information based questions; rather, you will expected to formulate and intellectual and well-organized response. I will be looking to see that you can show understanding of the questions in context as well as present valid support for your ideas. Contextual examples may be essential depending on the positions that you take.
Since this class is largely based on reader response, mere recitation of facts and events will not get you very far. I will be looking for creative and reflective ideas that show that you have engaged with the text and tried to look at it critically. However, don�t be afraid to tie in historical and cultural elements beyond the text to support your ideas.
